In the aquarium it thrives in a mature reef with branching corals or, failing that, rockwork with plenty of small perches and crevices among which to make its home.

Appearance

The body is short, stout and scaleless, in a bright lime to emerald green, sometimes with fine reddish or orange lines radiating across the face. The eyes are large and the mouth upturned, giving the classic clown-goby expression. Like other Gobiodon, it secretes a bitter, mildly toxic mucus over its skin that deters predators from eating it. Healthy specimens are alert, perch confidently in the open on coral or rock, and show bright, even colour with a rounded belly.

Temperament and Compatibility

Temperament is peaceful but timid. The Green Coral Goby is no threat to other fish and generally ignores tankmates, but it is a poor competitor for food and can be bullied or outcompeted by boisterous species. It is best kept in a calm community or nano reef. Several can sometimes be kept together in a larger tank with plenty of coral, though they may squabble over prime branches. It is safe with ornamental shrimp and other invertebrates.

Feeding

Feeding requires a little care because of the fish's tiny mouth. Offer small meaty foods such as enriched baby brine shrimp, cyclops, finely chopped mysis, copepods and small frozen preparations, ideally several times a day. New arrivals often prefer live foods at first and can usually be weaned onto small frozen items over time. A mature tank with a natural supply of copepods and other micro-prey greatly helps, especially while the fish is settling in.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum aquarium of around 40 L, which makes this an ideal nano and reef fish. Maintain temperature at 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4 and salinity around 1.020-1.026. Branching corals are the preferred home, but plenty of rockwork with small perches and crevices will also suit. Gentle to moderate flow and stable water conditions are ideal. Because it is so small and retiring, avoid housing it with anything large or aggressive enough to eat or harass it. Offered here as a bonded pair, they are endlessly watchable as they hop across the sand and "signal" to one another. However, they are honestly a difficult, expert-level fish: most specimens slowly starve in captivity, so they should only be attempted by experienced keepers with a mature, food-rich system.

Natural Habitat

This goby lives over open sand and rubble flats near reefs of the Western Pacific, constantly scooping mouthfuls of sand, filtering out tiny invertebrates and expelling the sand through its gills. Recreating this means a deep, fine sand bed, a mature aquarium and ideally a well-populated refugium that continually replenishes the interstitial life they depend on.

Appearance

The body is pale cream to tan with darker mottling, tall banded fins and two prominent black ocelli (eye-spots) on the dorsal fins. When threatened it faces intruders and flares these fins to look like the face of a larger creature. A healthy specimen has a rounded, well-filled belly; a pinched or hollow belly is a serious warning sign in this species.

Temperament and Compatibility

Temperament is peaceful and rather timid. A bonded pair is best kept together in a calm tank without boisterous or competitive tankmates that will outcompete them for food. It will not harm corals but may occasionally dust low corals with sifted sand. It is easily bullied, so choose quiet companions.

Feeding

Feeding is the crux of keeping this fish alive. Wild diet is tiny sand-dwelling invertebrates, and most aquariums simply cannot sustain that. Provide a deep mature sand bed and refugium, and target-feed several times a day with live and frozen enriched brine, mysis, live blackworms, copepods and fine carnivore preparations. Not all specimens learn to accept prepared foods, so ongoing live and frozen feeding is essential.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum aquarium of 190 L with a deep, fine sand bed and, ideally, a refugium feeding the display. Maintain temperature at 24–26°C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity around 1.020–1.026. A mature, stable, well-established system is critical; new tanks are not suitable. This species is reef safe. It spends the day scooping up mouthfuls of sand, filtering out tiny invertebrates and spitting the clean grains back out, keeping the substrate turned over and tidy. Reaching around 15 cm, it is a peaceful, characterful reef fish - but an honest one to research first, as it can slowly starve in an aquarium that cannot keep its sand bed stocked with live micro-food. Keep a well-sealed lid, as sleeper gobies are prone to jumping.

Natural Habitat

Valenciennea strigata lives across the Indo-Pacific on sand and rubble zones adjacent to reef, where monogamous pairs share a burrow they excavate beneath rocks. They rarely stray far from this refuge, retreating into it when startled and sealing it at night. In the aquarium they need an established system with a deep bed of fine sand, plenty of live rock and a healthy population of copepods and other small invertebrates - ideally supported by a refugium - to forage over.

Appearance

The body is elongate and pearly white to pale grey, topped by a vivid yellow head and a neon-blue cheek stripe that give the fish its name and much of its appeal. The mouth is large and downturned, perfectly suited to taking in sand. Males may develop slightly longer fins. Healthy specimens are alert, plump through the belly and constantly working the substrate; a pinched or sunken stomach is a warning sign of a fish that is not getting enough to eat.

Temperament and Compatibility

Temperament is peaceful. The Gold Head Sleeper Goby is no threat to other fish and mixes well in a calm community, though two unpaired individuals may squabble over territory unless the tank is large or they are a bonded pair. It is completely safe with corals but will constantly shower any low-lying corals and clams with sand, which some sensitive species dislike. It will not harm ornamental shrimp or other invertebrates.

Feeding

Feeding is the key to long-term success. This goby is a carnivore that naturally sifts the sand for tiny crustaceans and worms, and it can quickly strip a tank's microfauna bare. Supplement heavily with frequent small meals of enriched mysis, vitamin-soaked brine shrimp, live blackworm, copepods and finely chopped meaty foods. A mature sand bed and a productive refugium make all the difference. Do not rely on natural sifting alone; captive starvation is the most common cause of loss in this species.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum aquarium of around 110 L, with 200 L or larger recommended for a more stable food supply and open foraging area. Maintain temperature at 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4 and salinity around 1.020-1.026. A deep bed of fine, soft sand is essential, along with mature live rock offering caves and burrow sites. Gentle to moderate flow suits it. A tight-fitting lid is important, as these gobies jump readily, particularly when first settling in. With good feeding and a mature system this is a rewarding and useful reef resident.

Breeding

These gobies form monogamous pairs and will spawn in the aquarium, with the female laying eggs in the shared burrow and the male guarding them for a couple of days until they hatch. Raising the tiny planktonic larvae is difficult and requires dedicated rearing setups and live foods, so while pairing and spawning are often seen, successfully raising young is uncommon in the home aquarium. A bonded pair sharing a burrow is a delight to watch regardless.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Valenciennea strigata

Common Name

Gold Head Sleeper Goby (Blueband / Yellowhead Sleeper Goby)

Origin

Indo-Pacific sand and rubble zones near reef

Maximum Size

Up to 18 cm

Lifespan

3-5 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

110 L

Recommended Tank Size

200 L or larger

Diet

Carnivore; sand-sifter needing frequent small meaty foods

Water Temperature

24-27°C

pH Range

8.1-8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.020-1.026

Suitable For

Mature reef and fish-only systems with a deep sand bed

Reef Safe

Reef safe (may shower low corals with sand)

Plant Safe

Not applicable

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include clownfish, small peaceful wrasses, firefish, cardinalfish, dartfish, other calm gobies and reef community fish, as well as ornamental shrimp and snails.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with aggressive or boisterous fish that will outcompete it for food or intimidate it, as well as other unpaired sand-sifting gobies in smaller tanks where they may fight over territory.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0972/7236/5347/files/gold-head-sleeper-goby-43090648367395.webp?v=1790305844
chocolate-goby
Chocolate Goby | Amblygobius phalaena

Description

The Chocolate Goby (Sleeper Banded or Dragon Goby) is a hardy, hard-working sand-sifting goby that keeps the substrate clean and aerated by taking mouthfuls of sand and sieving out food. Attractive, endearing and useful, they are a lovely addition to a mature reef with an established sand bed.

Natural Habitat

Valenciennea longipinnis is found across the tropical western Pacific, living over sandy and rubble-strewn areas near reefs, usually in pairs sharing a burrow. It processes the substrate constantly, extracting tiny crustaceans, worms and organic matter. In the aquarium it needs a deep, fine sand bed and mature live rock hosting a healthy population of microfauna to forage on.

Appearance

A pale, elongated goby patterned with blue and orange lines and spots along the flanks and fins, with tall, flowing dorsal fins that give the fish its name. Males display more elaborate finnage. A healthy specimen is rounded through the belly and actively sifting; a pinched or hollow belly is a warning sign, as these gobies can slowly starve in tanks lacking food in the sand.

Temperament and Compatibility

Peaceful and non-aggressive towards other fish, though a bonded pair will defend their chosen burrow. They pose no threat to corals or ornamental invertebrates, but their constant sand-sifting can shower low-mounted corals with sand and rearrange the substrate, so place corals with that in mind. They suit calm community reefs.

Feeding

Primarily a carnivore feeding on the fauna it sifts from the sand, supplemented with mysis, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood and quality frozen and pellet foods. Because sand-sifting alone rarely provides enough, offer several small feeds daily and watch that both fish are eating and staying well filled.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum aquarium of around 150 L, with 200 L or larger recommended, and importantly a mature system with a deep, soft sand bed rich in microfauna. Maintain temperature at 24–26°C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity around 1.020–1.026. A tight-fitting lid is important, as sleeper gobies will jump when startled. It is reef safe with caution only because of its sand-showering habit, not because it harms livestock.

Breeding

These gobies form monogamous pairs and will spawn in the aquarium, laying eggs in a burrow which the male tends. It is endlessly watchable as it hops across the sand, scooping and sifting. However, it is honestly a difficult, expert-level fish: most specimens slowly starve in captivity, so it should only be attempted by experienced keepers with a mature, food-rich system.

Natural Habitat

This goby lives over open sand and rubble flats near reefs of the Western Pacific, constantly scooping mouthfuls of sand, filtering out tiny invertebrates and expelling the sand through its gills. Recreating this means a deep, fine sand bed, a mature aquarium and ideally a well-populated refugium that continually replenishes the interstitial life it depends on.

It is best kept in a calm tank without boisterous or competitive tankmates that will outcompete it for food, and it often does best as a bonded pair.

Be candid with yourself about the feeding commitment before purchase.

Breeding

Pairs form strong bonds and are known to spawn in captivity, laying eggs in a burrow, but raising the tiny planktonic larvae is extremely difficult and rarely achieved at home. This listing is priced per fish, so buying two lets you keep the bonded pairs these gobies naturally form in the wild - a captivating sight as they share and defend a burrow together. Each fish spends the day scooping mouthfuls of sand and filtering out tiny invertebrates, keeping the substrate turned over. Reaching around 15 cm, it is peaceful and full of character, but worth researching first, as it can slowly starve without a well-stocked sand bed. Keep a well-sealed lid, as sleeper gobies jump.

Natural Habitat

Valenciennea strigata lives across the Indo-Pacific on sand and rubble zones next to reef, where monogamous pairs excavate and share a burrow beneath rocks. They rarely stray far from this refuge, retreating into it when startled and sealing it at night. In the aquarium a pair needs an established system with a deep bed of fine sand, plenty of live rock and a healthy population of copepods and other small invertebrates - ideally supported by a refugium - to forage over.

Appearance

The body is elongate and pearly white to pale grey, topped by a vivid yellow head and a neon-blue cheek stripe. The mouth is large and downturned, ideal for taking in sand. Males tend to develop slightly longer, more pointed fins, which can help when selecting a pair. Healthy specimens are alert, plump through the belly and constantly working the substrate; a pinched or sunken stomach is a warning sign of a fish that is not feeding well.

Temperament and Compatibility

Temperament is peaceful. Gold Head Gobies are no threat to other fish and mix well in a calm community. A bonded pair will happily share territory, but two unpaired individuals may squabble in a smaller tank, so it is best to buy them together and let them settle as a pair. They are completely safe with corals, though they will shower low-lying corals and clams with sand, and they will not harm ornamental shrimp or other invertebrates.

Feeding

Feeding is the key to long-term success. These carnivores naturally sift sand for tiny crustaceans and worms and can quickly strip a tank's microfauna bare - and a pair depletes it twice as fast.

For a pair, provide a minimum aquarium of around 150 L, with 200 L or larger recommended for a more stable food supply and open foraging area. Maintain temperature at 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4 and salinity around 1.020-1.026. A deep bed of fine, soft sand is essential, along with mature live rock offering caves and burrow sites. Gentle to moderate flow suits them. A tight-fitting lid is important, as these gobies jump readily, especially when first settling in.

Breeding

These gobies form monogamous pairs and will spawn in the aquarium, with the female laying eggs in the shared burrow and the male guarding them for a couple of days until they hatch. Raising the tiny planktonic larvae is difficult and requires dedicated rearing setups and live foods, so while pairing and spawning are often seen, successfully raising young is uncommon at home. A bonded pair sharing a burrow is a delight to watch regardless.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Valenciennea strigata

Common Name

Gold Head Sleeper Goby (Blueband / Yellowhead Sleeper Goby)

Origin

Indo-Pacific sand and rubble zones near reef

Maximum Size

Up to 18 cm

Lifespan

3-5 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

150 L for a pair

Recommended Tank Size

200 L or larger

Diet

Carnivore; sand-sifter needing frequent small meaty foods

Water Temperature

24-27°C

pH Range

8.1-8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.020-1.026

Suitable For

Mature reef and fish-only systems with a deep sand bed

Reef Safe

Reef safe (may shower low corals with sand)

Plant Safe

Not applicable

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include clownfish, small peaceful wrasses, firefish, cardinalfish, dartfish, other calm gobies and reef community fish, as well as ornamental shrimp and snails.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with aggressive or boisterous fish that will outcompete them for food or intimidate them, as well as other unpaired sand-sifting gobies in smaller tanks where they may fight over territory.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0972/7236/5347/files/gold-head-goby-pair-each-10266760020259-sp.webp?v=1790313948
leather-coral-goby
Leather Coral Goby | Pleurosicya muscarum

Description

The Leather Coral Goby is a tiny, semi-transparent commensal goby that lives directly on soft corals, leather corals, sponges and clams, perfectly camouflaged against its host.

Within a pair the male is often slightly larger with longer, more pointed fins. Healthy specimens are alert, plump through the belly and constantly working the substrate; a pinched or sunken stomach is a warning sign of a fish that is not feeding well.

Temperament and Compatibility

Temperament is peaceful. As an established pair these gobies share territory harmoniously and pose no threat to other fish, mixing well in a calm community. They are completely safe with corals, though they will shower low-lying corals and clams with sand, and they will not harm ornamental shrimp or other invertebrates. Avoid adding a third, unpaired sleeper goby, which can trigger territorial disputes.

Feeding

Feeding is the key to long-term success. These carnivores naturally sift sand for tiny crustaceans and worms and can quickly strip a tank's microfauna bare - and a pair depletes it twice as fast.

For a pair, provide a minimum aquarium of around 150 L, with 200 L or larger recommended for a more stable food supply and open foraging area. A settled pair like this one is more likely to spawn, though raising the tiny planktonic larvae is difficult and requires dedicated rearing setups and live foods, so successfully raising young remains uncommon in the home aquarium.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Valenciennea strigata

Common Name

Gold Headed Sleeper Goby (Blueband / Yellowhead Sleeper Goby)

Origin

Indo-Pacific sand and rubble zones near reef

Maximum Size

Up to 18 cm each

Lifespan

3-5 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

150 L for a pair

Recommended Tank Size

200 L or larger

Diet

Carnivore; sand-sifter needing frequent small meaty foods

Water Temperature

24-27°C

pH Range

8.1-8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.020-1.026

Suitable For

Mature reef and fish-only systems with a deep sand bed

Reef Safe

Reef safe (may shower low corals with sand)

Plant Safe

Not applicable

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include clownfish, small peaceful wrasses, firefish, cardinalfish, dartfish, other calm gobies and reef community fish, as well as ornamental shrimp and snails.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with aggressive or boisterous fish that will outcompete them for food or intimidate them, as well as additional unpaired sand-sifting gobies that may trigger territorial disputes.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0972/7236/5347/files/gold-headed-goby-pair-43090648400163.webp?v=1790306128
rainford-goby
Rainford Goby | Koumansetta rainfordi

Description

The Rainford Goby (Koumansetta rainfordi), also called the Court Jester Goby, is a small, beautifully striped reef fish packed with character. It is easily outcompeted or intimidated, so house it only with other gentle species. It grazes on algae, detritus and micro-fauna and often ignores standard fare at first. Provide a mature refugium or live rock rich in copepods, and tempt it onto frozen enriched brine, mysis, calanus and algae-based preparations with frequent small feeds. A brand-new tank will slowly starve it. Captive-bred individuals are far easier and strongly preferred.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of 75 L, with 100 L or larger recommended, and only in a tank at least six months mature with a productive sand bed. This is a temperate to subtropical species, so aim for cooler water around 18–24°C rather than tropical reef temperatures; pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity around 1.020–1.026. A deep, soft sand bed is essential for burrowing, and gentle to moderate flow suits it best. In the wild it lives in a genuine partnership with a pistol shrimp: the nearly blind shrimp digs and maintains a burrow the pair share, while the sharp-eyed goby stands sentry at the entrance. The shrimp keeps one antenna resting on the goby's body at all times, and a flick of the goby's tail sends them both bolting for cover. Watching that relationship play out in a home aquarium is something few other fish can offer. Reaching around 8-12 cm depending on species, it is peaceful, reef safe and perfectly suited to a mature sand-bottomed reef.

Natural Habitat

Amblyeleotris gobies are found on sand and rubble flats at the base of Indo-Pacific reefs, including throughout tropical Australian waters. They hover just above their burrow entrance, dropping inside at the first sign of danger and re-emerging moments later to resume the watch. In the aquarium they need an open sand bed of at least 5 cm, with rubble or small rocks nearby to stabilise the burrow roof. Without loose substrate to dig in they become stressed and will not settle.

Appearance

A slender, torpedo-shaped fish with a pale cream to white body crossed by bands or rows of spots in orange, red or brown, and large, high-set eyes that give it an alert, watchful expression. It will defend the area immediately around its burrow but has no interest in the rest of the tank. Keep only one unless you have a large sand bed and can offer well-separated territories, as two shrimp gobies will squabble over the best burrow site. It is easily intimidated by boisterous or fast-moving fish, which will keep it hidden and off its food.

Feeding

A carnivore that takes small meaty foods readily once settled. Offer mysis, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood and quality frozen marine preparations, two or three times daily. New arrivals may be cautious and feed only near the burrow at first, which is normal. A mature tank with a natural population of copepods helps enormously while the fish settles in.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum aquarium of around 75 L, with 100 L or more preferred. Maintain temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4 and salinity 1.020-1.026. An open sand bed of at least 5 cm is essential, along with rubble and rockwork to support burrow construction. Gentle to moderate flow suits it best. Keep a tight-fitting lid - shrimp gobies are capable jumpers, particularly in the first weeks. Pairing it with an Alpheus pistol shrimp is not required but transforms the fish's confidence and is the whole reason most keepers want one.

Breeding

Pairs will spawn within the burrow, laying eggs on the burrow wall which the male tends. It lives in sheltered lagoon reefs, roosting in the outer branches of Acropora corals in loose groups of five to fifteen fish. The coral gives it shelter, a hunting perch and a place to spawn, and it rarely strays far from it. In the aquarium it does best in a mature reef with branching corals, or failing that plenty of rockwork offering small perches and crevices.

Appearance

The body is short, stout and scaleless in an even, bright lemon to golden yellow, with large eyes and the upturned mouth typical of the clown gobies. Like others in the genus it coats its skin in a bitter, mildly toxic mucus that makes it unpleasant to eat, which is its main defence against predators. A healthy fish is alert, perches confidently in the open, carries even colour with no pale or cloudy patches, and has a rounded belly rather than a pinched one.

Temperament and Compatibility

Peaceful but timid. The Yellow Coral Goby is no threat to anything else in the tank and largely ignores its tankmates, but it competes poorly for food and is easily bullied or simply beaten to the meal by busier fish. It suits a calm community or nano reef. Several can share a larger tank with plenty of coral, though they will squabble over the best branches. It is safe with ornamental shrimp and other invertebrates.

Feeding

In the wild it is a planktivore, meaning it feeds on the tiny drifting animals in the water column. In the aquarium the small mouth is the thing to plan around. Offer finely sized meaty foods such as enriched baby brine shrimp, cyclops, copepods, finely chopped mysis and small frozen preparations, several times a day if you can. New arrivals often want live food at first and are usually weaned onto small frozen items over a few weeks. Hold the temperature at 24 to 27 degrees Celsius, pH at 8.1 to 8.4 and salinity at 1.020 to 1.026. Branching corals are the preferred home, and gentle to moderate flow with stable water suits it best. Because it is so small and retiring, keep it away from anything large or boisterous enough to eat or harass it. Given a calm setup it is hardy and long lived for a fish of its size.

Breeding

This species is a bidirectional protogynous hermaphrodite, which means every fish starts life as a female and can change sex in either direction as circumstances require. When two of the same sex pair up, one will switch, the larger female becoming male or the smaller male becoming female. Eggs are laid in circular bands around a coral branch, in masses of up to a thousand, and the male fertilises and guards them for about five days until they hatch. Pairing and spawning are often seen in the aquarium, though raising the tiny larvae calls for dedicated systems and live foods.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Gobiodon okinawae

Common Name

Yellow Coral Goby (Yellow Clown Goby)

Origin

Western Pacific, southern Japan to the southern Great Barrier Reef

Maximum Size

3.5 cm

Lifespan

4-6 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful but timid

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

40 L

Recommended Tank Size

75 L or larger

Diet

Carnivore; small meaty foods, often live at first

Water Temperature

24-27°C

pH Range

8.1-8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.020-1.026

Suitable For

Nano and mature reef aquariums

Reef Safe

Reef safe (may nip a few SPS polyps when spawning)

Plant Safe

Not applicable

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include other small, peaceful reef fish such as small clownfish, firefish, dartfish, small wrasses, other clown gobies and calm nano reef species, along with corals and ornamental shrimp.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with larger predatory or aggressive fish such as hawkfish, dottybacks, larger wrasses, groupers and lionfish that may eat or bully it, and with very boisterous fish that will outcompete it at feeding time.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0972/7236/5347/files/yellow-coral-goby-10346989879587-sp.webp?v=1790313949
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0972/7236/5347/collections/Assorted_Feeder_Blennies_and_Gobies_Favonigobius_Omobranchus_Bathygobius_Arenigobius_and_others_2483b52c-6aaa-4178-97de-fe69f966fb24.jpg?v=1788252683
