albino-congo-tetra-phenacogrammus-interruptus
Albino Congo Tetra | Phenacogrammus interruptus

Description

The Albino Congo Tetra is a soft, luminous take on one of Africa's most beautiful tetras. Where the wild fish shimmers blue-gold, the albino glows in pale peach, cream and pearl with red eyes, and mature males still trail the species' flowing, feathered central tail. Peaceful and graceful, it reaches around 8 cm and is stunning in a planted shoal.

Natural Habitat

Phenacogrammus interruptus is found in the Congo River basin of central Africa, in warm, slightly acidic, tannin-tinged water among plants and submerged roots. A gently-lit, planted tank with open swimming space and a darker substrate shows the fish at its best and helps it feel secure.

Appearance

A large, deep-bodied tetra with big scales that catch the light. In the albino form the usual iridescence is muted to soft cream, apricot and pearl, set off by pink-red eyes. Adult males develop long, flowing extensions to the dorsal, anal and central tail fins; females are rounder and plainer.

Temperament and Compatibility

Peaceful and sociable, though its size and briskness can unsettle very tiny or timid fish. It is a shoaling species and must be kept in a group of six or more, ideally with several males so their finnage develops fully. It mixes well with other medium peaceful community fish.

Feeding

An omnivore with a good appetite. Offer quality flake and micro-pellets as a staple, supplemented generously with frozen and live foods such as bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp. A varied diet keeps colour and finnage in top condition. It feeds mostly in the upper and middle water.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of around 100 L, with 115 L or larger better for a proper shoal of these active fish. Keep the temperature at 23–26 °C, pH 6.0–7.5 and hardness soft to moderately soft. Stable, clean water and a mature planted tank suit it well; it can be a little shy at first but settles beautifully. It is peaceful and generally plant safe.

Breeding

Breeding is possible but takes patience. Soft, acidic water and a good conditioning diet trigger spawning over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. Eggs are light-sensitive and best shaded, and the fry are slow starters that need tiny foods and pristine water.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Phenacogrammus interruptus (albino strain)

Common Name

Albino Congo Tetra

Origin

Congo River basin, Central Africa (captive-bred)

Maximum Size

Around 8 cm (males); females smaller

Lifespan

3–5 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful (schooling)

Difficulty

Beginner to intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

100 L

Recommended Tank Size

115 L or larger

Diet

Omnivore: flake, micro-pellets, frozen and live foods

Water Temperature

23–26 °C

pH Range

6.0–7.5

GH Range

Soft to moderately soft, around 4–15 dGH

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Planted community aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include other medium peaceful tetras, rainbowfish, rasboras, peaceful barbs, corydoras, bristlenose and gentle dwarf cichlids.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with very small fish it may intimidate, persistent fin-nippers, and large or aggressive cichlids.
