albino-jacob-peacock-aulonocara-jacobfreibergi
Albino Jacob Peacock | Aulonocara jacobfreibergi

Description

The Jacobfreibergi Peacock is one of Lake Malawi's most elegant cichlids, and this albino form wears it beautifully — males still flush with soft metallic blues and lacy, trailing finnage over a pale, pinkish body. A gentle, sand-sifting beauty that reaches around 12–15 cm, it glows under good lighting and makes a wonderful centrepiece for a peaceful Malawi tank.

Natural Habitat

Aulonocara jacobfreibergi inhabits Lake Malawi, favouring the caves and rocky recesses along the shoreline where light is dimmer. It hovers over the sand at cave mouths, sifting the substrate for tiny invertebrates. Hard, alkaline water, sand and plenty of rock with caves recreate its home.

Appearance

A graceful peacock cichlid. The albino strain replaces the usual deep colours with a soft cream-to-pink body, while dominant males still develop metallic blue on the face and flanks and long, flowing dorsal and tail extensions edged in white. Females and juveniles are plainer and more silvery.

Temperament and Compatibility

More peaceful than the mbuna, but still a territorial cichlid, especially dominant males at breeding time. It is best described as semi-aggressive: fine in a well-planned Malawi community with other peacocks and gentler haps, but not to be mixed with the fiercest mbuna, which will bully it. Keep one male with several females for the calmest results.

Feeding

A carnivorous sand-sifter in the wild, taking small invertebrates from the substrate. In the aquarium offer quality cichlid pellets and flake suited to Aulonocara, along with frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis and daphnia. Avoid over-feeding rich, protein-heavy foods that can cause bloat.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of around 200 L, with 280 L or larger better for a male and his group. Keep the temperature at 24–28 °C, pH 7.5–8.6 and hardness hard and alkaline. A soft sand bed for sifting, rockwork with caves and excellent water quality keep it healthy and colourful.

Breeding

A maternal mouthbrooder. A displaying male entices a female to spawn in or near his cave, after which she carries the eggs and fry in her mouth for around three weeks. Peacocks hybridise readily, so keep only one Aulonocara species if you want pure fry, and separate holding females to raise the young.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Aulonocara jacobfreibergi (albino strain)

Common Name

Albino Jacobfreibergi (Eureka) Peacock

Origin

Lake Malawi, East Africa (captive-bred)

Maximum Size

Around 12–15 cm

Lifespan

5–10 years with good care

Temperament

Semi-aggressive (territorial males)

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

200 L

Recommended Tank Size

280 L or larger

Diet

Carnivore (sand-sifter): cichlid pellets, flake, frozen foods

Water Temperature

24–28 °C

pH Range

7.5–8.6

GH Range

Hard, around 10–20 dGH (Rift Lake)

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Malawi peacock and gentle hap aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Mostly (may disturb plants while sifting sand)

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include other Aulonocara peacocks, gentle Malawi haps such as Copadichromis and Placidochromis, and calmer mbuna in a spacious, well-structured tank.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with very aggressive mbuna such as Auratus and Kenyi, small community fish, and soft-water species.
