albino-neon-tetra-paracheirodon-innesi
Albino Neon Tetra | Paracheirodon innesi

Description

The Neon Tetra needs no introduction, and this albino form gives the classic a soft, ethereal twist. In place of the famous electric blue-and-red stripe, the albino shows a pale, glassy body with a gentle pinkish shimmer and red eyes. Peaceful, tiny at around 3–4 cm and utterly charming in numbers, it is a lovely centrepiece for a soft-water shoal.

Natural Habitat

Paracheirodon innesi comes from the soft, acidic, tannin-stained blackwater streams of the western Amazon basin in South America, where it shoals in shaded water over leaf litter and among roots. Dark substrate, driftwood, botanicals and gentle, diffused lighting recreate its home and encourage confident schooling.

Appearance

A slim, small tetra. The albino strain lacks the deep pigment of the wild fish, so instead of the vivid neon stripe it shows a translucent, silvery-pink body with a faint iridescent line and pink-red eyes. Its delicate, understated look is best appreciated in a good-sized group.

Temperament and Compatibility

Thoroughly peaceful and happiest in numbers. Keep a shoal of at least eight, and ideally more, to reduce stress and bring out natural schooling. It is an ideal community fish among other small, gentle species and will not bother even the tiniest tank mates.

Feeding

An easy omnivore. Offer quality micro-flake and small granules as a staple, with regular small portions of frozen and live foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops and finely chopped bloodworm. Feed little and often for best colour and condition.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of around 60 L, with 75 L or larger better for a good shoal. Keep the temperature at 21–26 °C, pH 5.0–7.5 and hardness soft, around 1–10 dGH. Neons prefer stable, mature, soft water and dislike sudden changes, so add them only to an established tank and keep water quality high. Peaceful and completely plant safe.

Breeding

Breeding is challenging but achievable. It requires very soft, acidic water, dim light and a separate spawning tank, as eggs and fry are extremely light-sensitive and the adults eat the eggs. The tiny fry need infusoria before they can take baby brine shrimp, so patience and preparation are essential.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Paracheirodon innesi (albino strain)

Common Name

Albino Neon Tetra

Origin

Western Amazon basin, South America (captive-bred)

Maximum Size

Around 3–4 cm

Lifespan

5–8 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful (schooling)

Difficulty

Beginner (but add to a mature tank)

Minimum Tank Size

60 L

Recommended Tank Size

75 L or larger

Diet

Omnivore (micro): micro-flake, small granules, frozen and live foods

Water Temperature

21–26 °C

pH Range

5.0–7.5

GH Range

Soft, around 1–10 dGH

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Soft-water and planted community aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include other small peaceful tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, corydoras, otocinclus, small peaceful catfish, honey and dwarf gouramis and gentle dwarf cichlids.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with large or predatory fish, angelfish big enough to eat neons, fin-nippers, and boisterous tank mates.
