albino-snow-white-afra-cynotilapia-afra
Albino Snow White Afra | Cynotilapia afra

Description

The Albino Snow White Afra is a soft, pale take on the classic Afra mbuna, all cream and delicate washed blue. Compact and active at around 10-12cm, it brings a gentle bit of contrast to a display of brighter, bolder mbuna. Like all Afras it is a lively, territorial rock-dweller with plenty of character.

Natural Habitat

Cynotilapia afra is endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa, where it lives in the rocky shoreline zone. This is hard, alkaline, oxygen-rich water, and the fish rarely stray far from the shelter of the rocks.

Appearance

The albino Snow White form replaces the usual barred blue-and-black of the wild Afra with a near-white, cream body and faint pale-blue shading, set off by pinkish eyes. Males are the more colourful and develop egg-spots on the anal fin.

Temperament and Compatibility

Aggressive and territorial, especially males toward one another and toward similar-looking species. It should be kept in a mbuna setup with plenty of rock territories and a crowd of tankmates to spread aggression, ideally as one male with several females.

Feeding

An omnivore that grazes algae and Aufwuchs (the film of algae and tiny invertebrates on rocks) in the wild, so its diet should be vegetable-based. Use a good spirulina or mbuna flake/pellet as the staple and go easy on rich meaty foods, which can cause Malawi bloat.

Care Requirements

Provide hard, alkaline water, a stack of rockwork riddled with caves and crevices, and strong filtration to cope with the bioload of a busy mbuna tank. A larger group in a well-structured tank is calmer than a small one in a bare tank.

Breeding

A maternal mouthbrooder. The female broods the fertilised eggs in her mouth for around three weeks before releasing fully-formed fry. Given hard water and a settled group, breeding is reliable.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Cynotilapia afra

Common Name

Albino Snow White Afra

Origin

Africa (Lake Malawi, endemic)

Maximum Size

Up to about 10-12cm

Lifespan

7-8 years

Temperament

Aggressive, territorial

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

200 litres

Recommended Tank Size

250-300 litres or more

Diet

Omnivore (herbivore-leaning)

Water Temperature

24-27°C

pH Range

7.5-8.5

GH Range

10-20 dGH

Salinity

Not applicable

Suitable For

Lake Malawi mbuna aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Mostly (hardy plants only)

Suitable Tank Mates

Other robust mbuna of similar temperament, such as Pseudotropheus, Metriaclima (Maylandia), Labidochromis and other Cynotilapia, in a well-stocked rocky tank.

Avoid Keeping With

Peaceful community fish, soft-water species, small or timid tankmates, and closely similar-looking mbuna that will trigger heavy male aggression.
