anubias-nana-petite
Anubias Nana Petite | Anubias barteri var. nana 'Petite'

Description

A true dwarf Anubias, and one of the most useful nano-scaping plants there is. Anubias 'Petite' carries the same near-indestructible toughness as its larger cousins in a much smaller package — miniature dark-green leaves on a slow-creeping rhizome that shrimp adore. Tie it to hardscape, ignore it, and it will quietly persist for years.

Natural Habitat

A cultivated dwarf form of the West African Anubias barteri var. nana, whose wild ancestors grow on rock and wood along shaded Cameroon streams, often emersed. In the aquarium it wants the same shady, stable conditions and something solid to grip, and grows perfectly well fully submerged.

Appearance

Tiny, thick, oval leaves roughly 1.5 cm long on a compact rhizome, forming a low cushion rather than a tall plant. A mature clump stays under about 5 cm tall. The portion sold is an established mini-plant that will slowly add leaves and spread sideways — it does not melt and regrow like crypts.

Placement and Aquascaping

A foreground plant, perfect on small stones, spider wood tips and the front of nano tanks. It is an epiphyte — never bury the rhizome, or it rots; anchor it and let only the roots reach the substrate. Its small scale makes it ideal for detail work where full-size nana would look coarse.

Planting and Propagation

Remove any pot and rockwool, then superglue or tie the little rhizome to rock or wood. Propagate by splitting the rhizome into sections, each keeping a few leaves.

Care Requirements

Low to moderate light suits it best; because it grows so slowly, strong light mostly encourages algae on the leaves. CO2 is not required, and a light liquid feed is plenty. It tolerates 22–28 °C, pH 6.0–7.5 and soft to hard water. Growth is slow, so keep an eye out for algae and keep it lightly lit.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Anubias barteri var. nana 'Petite'

Common Name

Anubias Nana Petite

Origin

Cultivated form (wild ancestor Cameroon, West Africa)

Maximum Height

3–5 cm

Growth Rate

Slow

Difficulty

Beginner

Placement

Foreground (epiphyte)

Lighting

Low to moderate

CO2 Requirement

Not required

Fertilisation

Liquid fertiliser (light feeder)

Water Temperature

22–28 °C

pH Range

6.0–7.5

GH Range

3–15 dGH (very tolerant)

Propagation

Rhizome division

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Nano tanks, shrimp tanks, beginners, detailed aquascapes

Suitable Tank Mates

Shrimp, snails and peaceful community fish; the tough leaves are ignored by most fish, and shrimp graze biofilm from them happily.

Avoid Keeping With

Large diggers and rhizome-nibblers that could dislodge such a small plant, and very bright open placement that invites green spot algae on the slow-growing leaves.

Australian-grown aquarium plants for in-store collection or local delivery.
