Anubias barteri var. nana is a compact, slow-growing rhizome plant that tolerates almost any lighting, ignores CO2, and carries leaves tough enough that even goldfish and cichlids leave it alone. If a tank can keep fish alive, it can keep Anubias nana alive.

Natural Habitat

Native to Cameroon in West Africa, where it grows on rocks and logs along shaded rainforest streams, often half in and half out of the water. In the aquarium it asks for the same thing: a shady spot, something solid to grip, and stable tropical water. It grows fully submerged without complaint.

Appearance

Thick, broadly oval leaves of a deep glossy green, each 3–6 cm long, on a creeping rhizome. A mature plant reaches around 5–15 cm tall and spreads slowly sideways. The portion sold is an established plant that will simply keep adding a leaf every few weeks — Anubias does not melt and regrow the way crypts and swords do.

Placement and Aquascaping

A foreground to midground plant, ideal wedged into hardscape crevices or tied at the base of driftwood. It is an epiphyte — never bury the rhizome in substrate or it will rot; only the white roots may be covered. Slow growth means it holds its shape for years with almost no trimming.

Planting and Propagation

Remove any pot and rockwool, then tie or superglue the rhizome to wood or rock, or wedge it between stones. Propagate by cutting the rhizome into sections, each with at least three or four leaves.

Care Requirements

Low light is all it needs — strong light mainly grows algae on the slow-moving leaves, so keep it shaded or dose less light than you think. CO2 is not required, and a light dose of liquid fertiliser covers its modest appetite. It handles 22–28 °C, pH 6.0–7.5 and soft to hard water. Growth is slow: expect roughly one new leaf every two to four weeks.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Anubias barteri var. nana

Common Name

Anubias Nana

Origin

Cameroon, West Africa

Maximum Height

5–15 cm

Growth Rate

Slow

Difficulty

Beginner

Placement

Foreground to midground (epiphyte)

Lighting

Low

CO2 Requirement

Not required

Fertilisation

Liquid fertiliser (light feeder)

Water Temperature

22–28 °C

pH Range

6.0–7.5

GH Range

3–15 dGH (very tolerant)

Propagation

Rhizome division

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Beginners, low-tech tanks, goldfish and cichlid tanks

Suitable Tank Mates

Practically everything — community fish, shrimp, snails, and notably goldfish and most cichlids, which destroy softer plants but rarely bother the tough Anubias leaves.

Avoid Keeping With

Little troubles it.
