bacopa
Bacopa | Bacopa caroliniana

Description

Bacopa is one of the classic beginner stem plants – upright, sturdy and slow enough to be tidy without constant trimming. Supplied here as the green Bacopa caroliniana, it forms neat columns of rounded leaves that suit the mid to background. It thrives in a plain low-tech tank and simply does better still with more light and a little care.

Natural Habitat

Bacopa caroliniana grows in swamps, ditches and slow streams across the south-eastern United States, both emersed on wet mud and fully submerged. It is genuinely amphibious, which is part of why it adapts so readily to aquarium life across a wide range of conditions.

Appearance

Thick, fleshy stems carry pairs of oval, slightly succulent leaves. In moderate light the plant is a solid green; under strong light the tops flush copper, bronze and pink. Crushed leaves give off a faint lemon scent. Stems climb to 30–60 cm and are supplied as cuttings ready to plant and root.

Placement and Aquascaping

A midground to background stem plant, best planted in small groups of several stems for a fuller look. Trim the tops when they near the surface and replant the cuttings to build a denser stand.

Planting and Propagation

Remove any lead weight or rockwool, separate the stems and plant each a couple of centimetres into the substrate. Propagation is by cuttings – snip the top few centimetres and replant; both the cutting and the trimmed stem will grow on.

Care Requirements

Moderate light and a temperature of 20–28 °C suit it. CO2 is not required but improves growth and colour, and a regular liquid fertiliser keeps it healthy; the tops colour best with good light plus iron-rich dosing. Growth is moderate rather than rampant, so it stays manageable in a low-tech setup.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Bacopa caroliniana

Common Name

Bacopa, Lemon Bacopa

Origin

South-eastern USA

Maximum Height

30–60 cm

Growth Rate

Moderate

Difficulty

Beginner

Placement

Midground / Background

Lighting

Moderate to High

CO2 Requirement

Not required (beneficial)

Fertilisation

Liquid fertiliser; iron for red tones

Water Temperature

20–28 °C

pH Range

6.0–8.0

GH Range

2–15 dGH

Propagation

Cuttings (replant the tops)

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Beginners, low-tech & community tanks

Suitable Tank Mates

Gets on with almost any peaceful community fish, tetras, rasboras, livebearers, gouramis, corydoras, shrimp and snails.
