It is active and personable but becomes a big fish, so it needs a large, established aquarium with plenty of open swimming room and strong water movement.

Natural Habitat

In the wild, the Bariene Tang is associated with clear outer reef slopes and deeper coastal reefs of the Indo-Pacific. It ranges widely, grazing algae from rock and reef surfaces throughout the day. Replicating this environment means providing mature live rock with algae films for grazing, generous open swimming lanes and strong, well-oxygenated flow. A newly set-up aquarium is rarely ideal, as this fish does best in a large, stable system with established grazing surfaces.

Appearance

The Bariene Tang has a deep, oval body, an orange facial mask with fine markings around the eyes, and a black spot near the tail base. Colour and pattern intensify in a healthy, well-fed adult. This is a large tang that reaches around 40–50 cm, so its adult size and swimming needs must be planned for before purchase. Like all surgeonfish it carries a sharp scalpel near the tail base. Healthy specimens are alert, well-filled and grazing actively, without pinched bellies, cloudy eyes or rapid breathing.

Temperament and Compatibility

Temperament is best described as semi-aggressive, particularly towards other tangs and fish of similar shape. In a large aquarium it can be a good community fish with dissimilar species. Suitable companions include clownfish, wrasses, angels, rabbitfish, chromis and other robust reef fish. Housing it with other tangs is best attempted only in very large systems with careful planning. Add it to a settled aquarium and avoid combinations that lead to constant chasing.

Feeding

Feeding should be predominantly herbivorous. Offer dried marine algae and nori on a clip, algae-based flakes and pellets, and a rotation of prepared herbivore foods, ideally several small feeds through the day. Occasional meaty foods such as mysis shrimp can be offered, but the diet should remain mostly plant based. A well-fed tang holds its colour and body condition and is less likely to graze on corals.

Care Requirements

For long-term success, provide a minimum aquarium size of 750 L, with 1100 L or larger strongly recommended given the adult size and activity level. A long tank with generous open swimming room suits this species. Maintain temperature at 24–26°C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity around 1.020–1.026. Strong, well-oxygenated flow is important. Lighting can be standard reef lighting. Provide open lanes and mature live rock for grazing. Strong filtration, a large protein skimmer and regular water changes of 10–20% are important. Surgeonfish are prone to white spot, so stable water quality and a quarantine routine are advised. This species is considered reef safe.

Breeding

Breeding in the home aquarium is not achieved and should not be expected. In nature, surgeonfish spawn in open water, releasing eggs and sperm into the current, with larvae drifting as plankton before settling. This requires specialised conditions far beyond normal home aquarium keeping. For hobbyists, the focus should be on long-term health, correct herbivorous feeding, excellent water quality and low stress.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Acanthurus bariene

Common Name

Bariene Tang (Black-Spot / Orange-Face Tang)

Origin

Indo-Pacific outer reef slopes and deeper coastal reefs

Maximum Size

40–50 cm

Lifespan

Often 10 years or more with excellent care

Temperament

Semi-aggressive, especially to other tangs

Difficulty

Intermediate to advanced

Minimum Tank Size

750 L

Recommended Tank Size

1100 L or larger

Diet

Herbivore; marine algae, nori and algae-based prepared foods

Water Temperature

24–26°C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.020–1.026

Suitable For

Large, established reef and fish-only systems

Reef Safe

Reef safe

Plant Safe

Not applicable

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include clownfish, wrasses, angels, rabbitfish, chromis and other robust reef fish that differ in shape and colour, in a large aquarium with generous swimming room.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with other tangs except in very large systems, highly aggressive fish that will harass it, and avoid adding it to small or newly set-up tanks.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0972/7236/5347/files/Bariene_Tang_Acanthurus_bariene_2291e438-0901-4548-83b3-50141259c9aa.jpg?v=1781681465
