Peaceful, active and hardy, it shines in a shoal in a planted tank, where the males colour up and display to one another. Reaching around 12 cm, it is a rewarding, easy-going rainbowfish for a spacious community.

Natural Habitat

Chilatherina fasciata comes from the streams, rivers and lakes of the Mamberamo and surrounding river systems of northern New Guinea, where it lives in warm, clear, well-oxygenated water among vegetation and structure. A planted tank with open swimming space, some flow and bright light recreates its home and brings out the males' colour.

Appearance

A classic rainbowfish shape, deep-bodied and laterally compressed, with mature males developing a shifting sheen of blue-green over the front and yellow-gold to the rear, crossed by fine dark bars. Females and young fish are more silvery. Males colour up most intensely when displaying, and the colours shift with light and mood.

Temperament and Compatibility

Peaceful, active and social, best kept in a shoal of six or more, ideally with several males so they display their best colours to each other. It mixes beautifully with other rainbowfish and robust, peaceful community fish. A group and plenty of swimming space bring out confident, colourful behaviour.

Feeding

An omnivore that takes quality flake and micro pellets readily, and appreciates frozen and live foods such as bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp, along with some vegetable matter. A varied diet keeps the males' colours rich. Feed small amounts a couple of times a day, offering foods at the surface and mid-water.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of around 150 L, with 200 L or larger better for a good shoal of these active swimmers. Keep temperature at 24–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.0 and moderately hard water, around GH 8–20. Provide planting, open swimming space, some flow and a secure lid. It is hardy and undemanding, making it a great community rainbowfish. Completely plant safe.

Breeding

An egg-scatterer that spawns readily among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops over an extended period, laying a few eggs each day. The adults largely ignore the eggs, which are best moved with the mop to a separate tank. Fry hatch after a week or so and are raised on infusoria and then fine fry foods and baby brine shrimp.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Chilatherina fasciata

Common Name

Barred Rainbowfish

Origin

Northern New Guinea (Mamberamo system)

Maximum Size

Around 12 cm

Lifespan

5–8 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful (active schooling)

Difficulty

Beginner

Minimum Tank Size

150 L

Recommended Tank Size

200 L or larger

Diet

Omnivore: flake, micro pellets, frozen and live foods, some vegetable matter

Water Temperature

24–28 °C

pH Range

7.0–8.0

GH Range

Moderate to hard, around 8–20 dGH

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Planted community and rainbowfish aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include other rainbowfish, peaceful barbs, larger tetras, corydoras, and other robust, peaceful community fish that enjoy similar water.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with fin-nippers, slow or very timid species, and large or aggressive fish.
