A graceful centrepiece for the larger planted community, it grows to around 15cm long and considerably taller once its trailing fins develop. Beautiful but a cichlid at heart, so choose its company with a little care.

Natural Habitat

Pterophyllum scalare comes from the slow, warm rivers, flooded forests and backwaters of the Amazon basin in South America, where it drifts among submerged roots and tall vegetation in soft, slightly acidic water. Its laterally compressed body is perfectly shaped for slipping between vertical stems.

Appearance

A disc-shaped, deep-bodied cichlid with long, flowing dorsal, anal and pelvic fins. The marble form shows irregular black patterning over silver, unique to each fish. Body length reaches around 15cm, but the fins make it much taller - often to 20cm or more - so it needs a tall tank.

Temperament and Compatibility

Generally peaceful but semi-aggressive, especially when pairing off or spawning, when a pair will defend a territory. It is a slow, stately swimmer that can be bullied by boisterous fish, yet will also eat very small fish such as neon tetras. Best in a community of medium-sized, calm species.

Feeding

An omnivore. Feed a quality flake or pellet as a staple, supplemented generously with frozen and live foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia. A varied diet brings out the best colour and finnage.

Care Requirements

Provide a tall aquarium of at least 150-200 litres with warm, soft-to-neutral water at 24-30°C, gentle filtration and some tall plants or driftwood to mimic its natural cover. Angelfish are hardy once established but appreciate stable, clean water and enough height to hold their fins proudly.

Breeding

Open substrate spawners and devoted parents. A bonded pair cleans a vertical surface such as a leaf, slate or pipe and lays its eggs there, then both fish guard and fan the eggs and shepherd the fry. Pairs form naturally from a group grown up together.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Pterophyllum scalare

Common Name

Black Marble Angelfish

Origin

South America (Amazon basin)

Maximum Size

Around 15cm long (to ~20cm tall)

Lifespan

8-10 years or more

Temperament

Semi-aggressive (cichlid)

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

150 litres (tall)

Recommended Tank Size

200 litres or more

Diet

Omnivore

Water Temperature

24-30°C

pH Range

6.0-7.5

GH Range

3-12 dGH (soft to moderately hard)

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Tall, planted community tanks

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

Medium-sized peaceful fish such as larger tetras (rummynose, black skirt), rasboras, Corydoras, bristlenose catfish, peaceful gouramis and rainbowfish.
