Peaceful, hardy and easy to keep, it shoals beautifully and suits a first soft-water community. It stays tiny at around 4 cm and looks its best in a good-sized group under gentle light.

Natural Habitat

Inpaichthys kerri comes from the clear and blackwater tributaries of the upper Rio Aripuanã in the Brazilian Amazon, among leaf litter, roots and shaded margins. The water there is soft, acidic and warm. A planted tank with driftwood, leaf litter, a dark substrate and subdued lighting brings out its colour and helps it feel secure.

Appearance

A slender little characin with a luminous blue to purple lateral stripe topped by a fine gold line, and a small adipose fin that helps tell it apart from the true Emperor Tetra. Males are more intensely coloured with a blue-tinged adipose fin, while females are rounder and a little plainer. Colour glows most in soft, dark water.

Temperament and Compatibility

Peaceful and sociable, the Blue Emperor is a schooling fish best kept in a group of at least six to eight, which brings out both colour and natural behaviour. It mixes happily with other small, gentle community fish and is neither a nipper nor easily bullied among suitable companions.

Feeding

A micro-omnivore, it takes quality flake and micro pellet along with small live and frozen foods such as daphnia, cyclops, baby brine shrimp and micro bloodworm. A varied diet keeps its colour rich and its condition good.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of around 40 L, with 60 L or larger better for a full school in a community. Keep temperature at 23–28 °C, pH 5.5–7.5 (best kept slightly acidic) and soft water. Blue Emperors appreciate clean, stable, gently-filtered water and shaded, planted surroundings. Completely plant safe.

Breeding

Blue Emperors are egg-scatterers that deposit eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops in soft, acidic water, giving no parental care. To raise fry, remove the adults after spawning and keep the eggs in dim conditions. The tiny fry take infusoria and fine foods before moving on to baby brine shrimp.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Inpaichthys kerri

Common Name

Blue Emperor Tetra (Blue/Purple Emperor)

Origin

Rio Aripuanã, Amazon basin, Brazil

Maximum Size

Around 4 cm

Lifespan

3–5 years

Temperament

Peaceful (schooling)

Difficulty

Beginner

Minimum Tank Size

40 L

Recommended Tank Size

60 L or larger

Diet

Omnivore (micro): flake, micro pellet, small live and frozen foods

Water Temperature

23–28 °C

pH Range

5.5–7.5

GH Range

Soft, around 1–12 dGH

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Soft-water planted community aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include cardinal and ember tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids such as rams and apistogrammas, corydoras and otocinclus.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with large or aggressive fish, boisterous barbs, fin-nippers, and anything big enough to eat a small tetra.
