bosemani-rainbowfish-melanotaenia-boesemani
Bosemani Rainbowfish | Melanotaenia boesemani

Description

The Boeseman's Rainbowfish is a living sunset — a steel blue-grey front half melting into a blaze of orange and gold behind, a colour split found in no other fish. Peaceful, hardy and endlessly active, males can reach around 11 cm and colour up most vividly when kept in a group. It is deservedly one of the most popular rainbowfish in the hobby.

Natural Habitat

Melanotaenia boesemani is found only in the Ayamaru Lakes region of the Vogelkop Peninsula in West Papua, Indonesia, living in warm, clear to slightly turbid lakes and streams among dense marginal vegetation. These are hard, alkaline waters, which is worth remembering when setting up their tank.

Appearance

Mature males show the signature two-tone body — bluish-grey at the head shading to burnt orange at the tail — with the colour deepening dramatically during display. Females and young fish are more silvery and subdued. Like all rainbowfish, colours intensify with age, good diet and morning light.

Temperament and Compatibility

A thoroughly peaceful, active schooling fish, it is happiest in a group of six or more where males display and spar harmlessly for attention. Its fast, busy swimming suits a spacious community of similarly lively, non-aggressive fish.

Feeding

An omnivore with a hearty appetite, it takes quality flake and small pellets readily, and colours up best with regular live and frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworm, plus some vegetable matter or algae-based foods.

Care Requirements

Give a group a minimum of 120 L, ideally 200 L or more with plenty of length for swimming. Keep temperature at 24–30 °C, pH 7.0–8.0 and moderately hard to hard water (around 9–19 dGH), with strong filtration, good oxygenation and open swimming space fringed with plants. Hardy and long-lived when kept well. Plant safe.

Breeding

Boeseman's Rainbowfish are continuous egg-scatterers that deposit small numbers of sticky eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops over many days. The eggs are not eaten as readily as some species', and fry hatch after a week or so and can be raised on infusoria and fine foods.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Melanotaenia boesemani

Common Name

Boeseman's Rainbowfish

Origin

Ayamaru Lakes, West Papua, Indonesia

Maximum Size

Around 11 cm (males); females a little smaller

Lifespan

5–8 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful, active schooling fish

Difficulty

Beginner

Minimum Tank Size

120 L for a group

Recommended Tank Size

200 L or larger

Diet

Omnivore: flake, small pellets, live and frozen daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm, vegetable foods

Water Temperature

24–30 °C

pH Range

7.0–8.0

GH Range

Moderately hard to hard, around 9–19 dGH

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Larger planted community tanks

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include other rainbowfish, larger tetras and rasboras, peaceful barbs, corydoras, bristlenose catfish and similarly active, good-natured community fish.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with slow, long-finned or timid fish that will be out-swum at feeding time, aggressive cichlids, and notorious fin-nippers.
