canary-blenny
Canary Blenny | Meiacanthus oualanensis

Description

The Canary Blenny is a brilliant lemon-yellow fang blenny with an endearing, alert personality. Unlike its fin-nipping relatives it is a well-behaved community fish, hovering in the water column and perching on the rocks. Its bright colour and hardiness make it one of the best blennies for a reef aquarium.

Natural Habitat

In the wild, the Canary Blenny is associated with coral-rich reefs of the western Pacific, where it hovers near the rockwork and shelters in small holes. Replicating this environment means providing mature live rock with plenty of small crevices for shelter and perching, plus open water for hovering. A settled reef aquarium suits it well.

Appearance

The Canary Blenny is uniformly bright yellow with a slender body and the alert, large-eyed look typical of Meiacanthus fang blennies. It reaches around 10–12 cm. Colour stays vivid in a healthy, well-fed fish. Healthy specimens are alert, hovering and perching actively and well-filled through the body, without a pinched belly or clamped fins.

Temperament and Compatibility

Temperament is best described as peaceful, though it can be mildly territorial towards other fang blennies or very similar-looking fish. It possesses venomous fangs used only in defence, which means most predators leave it alone, so it mixes safely with a wide range of tank mates. Suitable companions include clownfish, chromis, cardinalfish, gobies, wrasses, tangs and other peaceful to semi-aggressive reef fish. It is fully safe with corals and invertebrates.

Feeding

Feed as a carnivore with a fast metabolism. Offer frequent small feeds of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood and quality marine flakes and pellets. Two or three small feeds a day suit it well. Most individuals feed readily soon after settling and are not fussy, which adds to their appeal as a hardy reef fish.

Care Requirements

For long-term success, provide a minimum aquarium size of 110 L, with larger tanks fine. Maintain temperature at 24–27°C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity around 1.020–1.026. Moderate flow suits it. Lighting can be standard reef lighting. Provide mature live rock with small holes and crevices for shelter. Strong filtration, protein skimming and regular water changes of 10–20% are recommended. A well-fitted lid is useful, as blennies can jump.

Breeding

The Canary Blenny is one of the more frequently captive-bred marine fish. It lays eggs in a crevice or shell that the male guards, and dedicated breeders rear the larvae on small live foods. Casual spawning may be seen in a mature tank, but rearing the young requires dedicated culture. For most keepers the focus should be on a healthy, colourful fish and suitable tank mates.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Meiacanthus oualanensis

Common Name

Canary Blenny (Canary Fang Blenny)

Origin

Western Pacific coral reefs

Maximum Size

10–12 cm

Lifespan

4–6 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful (mildly territorial to similar blennies)

Difficulty

Easy

Minimum Tank Size

110 L

Recommended Tank Size

Larger is fine

Diet

Carnivore; small meaty foods, flakes and pellets

Water Temperature

24–27°C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.020–1.026

Suitable For

Reef and marine community aquariums

Reef Safe

Reef safe

Plant Safe

Not applicable

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include clownfish, chromis, cardinalfish, gobies, wrasses, tangs and other peaceful to semi-aggressive reef fish, along with corals and ornamental invertebrates.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with other fang blennies or very similar-looking fish in smaller tanks, and very aggressive fish that may bully it.
