Peaceful, active and fully reef safe, it is one of the best and most colourful flasher wrasses for a reef community. Keep a tight-fitting lid, as flasher wrasses are keen jumpers.

Natural Habitat

In the wild, Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse is associated with coral-rich reef slopes and rubble zones of the western Pacific, where it hovers just above the reef in loose groups picking plankton from the current and darting into cover when startled. Replicating this environment means providing mature live rock with crevices, open swimming space above the reef and moderate flow.

Appearance

The male Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse is vividly coloured in red, orange and blue with heightened fins he flares during rapid display "flashes"; females and sub-males are more muted. It has a slim, fast body and reaches only around 8 cm, making it well suited to smaller reefs. Colour intensifies with good nutrition, stable water and the presence of females. Healthy specimens are alert, active, well-filled and feeding readily.

Temperament and Compatibility

Temperament is best described as peaceful. It mixes well with almost all reef fish and is safe with corals and ornamental invertebrates, though males can spar with other flasher or fairy wrasses in smaller tanks. Suitable companions include clownfish, small gobies, blennies, chromis, anthias, dartfish and other peaceful reef fish. A male with several females is an excellent, colourful arrangement and encourages the best displays.

Feeding

Feed as a planktivore. Offer frequent small feeds of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods and other small meaty marine foods, plus fine marine pellets and flakes once accepted. At least a few small feeds a day suit its fast metabolism and keep colour and condition strong. Most individuals feed readily once settled, though new arrivals may prefer small frozen or live foods first.

Care Requirements

For long-term success, provide a minimum aquarium size of 200 L, with 300 L or larger recommended if keeping a group. Maintain temperature at 24–27°C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity around 1.020–1.026. Moderate reef flow suits it. Lighting can be standard reef lighting, under which the male's display colours look their best. Provide mature live rock with crevices plus open swimming space. Strong filtration, protein skimming and regular water changes of 10–20% are recommended. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as flasher wrasses jump.

Breeding

Breeding in the home aquarium is uncommon. Flasher wrasses are protogynous hermaphrodites, and a dominant male displays intensely to females at dusk. They are pelagic spawners with delicate planktonic larvae requiring specialised rearing beyond normal home aquarium keeping. For most keepers, a displaying male with females is the realistic and rewarding goal.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Paracheilinus carpenteri

Common Name

Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse

Origin

Western Pacific coral reef slopes and rubble zones

Maximum Size

8 cm

Lifespan

4–6 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

200 L

Recommended Tank Size

300 L or larger for a group

Diet

Planktivore; small meaty foods, fine pellets and flakes

Water Temperature

24–27°C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.020–1.026

Suitable For

Peaceful reef and marine community aquariums

Reef Safe

Reef safe

Plant Safe

Not applicable

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include clownfish, small gobies, blennies, chromis, anthias, dartfish and other peaceful reef fish, along with corals and ornamental invertebrates.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with other flasher or fairy wrasses in smaller tanks, aggressive fish that will harass it, and open-top tanks without a secure lid.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0972/7236/5347/files/Carpenter_s_Flasher_Wrasse_Paracheilinus_carpenteri_1716910f-3bbd-4fd7-b4f6-71f3ccbaae3a.jpg?v=1781681553
