cobalt-zebra-cichlid-maylandia-callainos
Cobalt Zebra Cichlid | Maylandia callainos

Description

Pure electric blue from nose to tail, the Cobalt Zebra is one of the most dazzling and dependable mbuna. Reaching around 13–15 cm, it is hardy, active and endlessly photogenic over pale rock — but, like all mbuna, it is a boisterous, aggressive Rift Lake cichlid that needs a group and plenty of space.

Natural Habitat

Native to the rocky shorelines of Lake Malawi in the East African Rift. The lake's water is warm, very hard and strongly alkaline. Mbuna live among the rocks, grazing the carpet of algae and micro-organisms — the 'aufwuchs' — that covers every surface.

Appearance

A robust, torpedo-shaped cichlid in solid, vivid cobalt-blue; some fish carry faint barring, and a white or paler form also exists. Males are the more intense and add egg-spots to the anal fin; females are often a touch smaller and duller. Colour holds well year-round.

Temperament and Compatibility

Aggressive and territorial, as expected of mbuna. Overstocking a large tank actually helps by spreading aggression, and a ratio of one male to several females reduces harassment. Keep only with other robust, similarly feisty mbuna — never with peaceful community fish or gentle peacocks.

Feeding

A herbivore built to graze algae. Feed a spirulina- and vegetable-based cichlid flake or pellet as the staple, with fresh greens. Keep protein low and avoid mammalian meats and blood-rich foods, which readily cause the digestive disorder 'Malawi bloat'.

Care Requirements

Provide a tank of at least 200 litres with abundant rockwork arranged into caves and territories, plus open sand for swimming. Hard, alkaline, warm and well-filtered water is essential, along with regular water changes to cope with the heavy bioload of a busy mbuna group.

Breeding

A prolific maternal mouthbrooder. After a rock-side courtship the female holds the eggs and fry in her mouth for around three weeks before releasing free-swimming young. Fry take crushed flake and baby brine shrimp; strip or separate holding females to raise the most.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Maylandia callainos

Common Name

Cobalt Blue Zebra Cichlid

Origin

Lake Malawi, East Africa

Maximum Size

13–15 cm

Lifespan

6–10 years

Temperament

Aggressive, territorial

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

200 litres

Recommended Tank Size

250+ litres

Diet

Herbivore (algae grazer)

Water Temperature

24–28 °C

pH Range

7.8–8.6

GH Range

8–15 dGH (hard)

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Lake Malawi mbuna aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

No (herbivorous; grazes and uproots plants)

Suitable Tank Mates

Other robust Malawi mbuna of similar temperament, kept in numbers, plus large synodontis catfish.

Avoid Keeping With

Peaceful community fish, soft-water species, gentle Malawi peacocks, and anything too small or slow to escape a territorial mbuna.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0972/7236/5347/files/Cobalt_Zebra_Cichlid_Maylandia_callainos_f20b3a6f-eff7-42fc-a9f4-86c575706db7.jpg?v=1781446641
