Growing to as much as 80 cm, this is a fish for the dedicated keeper with a very large system - it needs serious space, powerful filtration and a strong stomach for its appetite. Not a reef or community fish.

Natural Habitat

Also called the Yellow-edged Lyretail, it ranges widely across Indo-Pacific coral reefs, from lagoons to outer reef slopes. An ambush and pursuit hunter, it patrols the reef for smaller fish and crustaceans, using caves and overhangs for cover between hunts.

Appearance

A striking fish with a red to orange-red body peppered with small blue spots, and a distinctive lyre-shaped tail edged in bright yellow. Colour and pattern intensify with maturity and good condition. Its large mouth is a clear reminder of its predatory nature.

Temperament and Compatibility

Predatory and territorial. It will eat any fish or invertebrate small enough to swallow and should only share a very large aquarium with robust fish too big to be considered food. Keep one per system unless the tank is enormous.

Feeding

A carnivore with a big appetite. Offer meaty marine foods such as chunks of fish, prawn, squid and other seafood. Avoid feeding freshwater feeder fish long-term. Feed to good condition without overfeeding a fish that produces a heavy waste load.

Care Requirements

This fish needs a minimum of 1000 litres, with 2000 litres or more strongly recommended for an adult. Maintain temperature 24–26 °C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity 1.020–1.026. Provide oversized filtration, strong flow, open swimming space and large caves. A secure, heavy lid is essential.

Breeding

A protogynous hermaphrodite that spawns pelagic eggs in the wild. It is not bred in home aquariums; the realistic goal is a healthy, long-lived showpiece in a suitably huge system.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Variola louti

Common Name

Coronation Coral Trout (Yellow-edged Lyretail)

Origin

Indo-Pacific coral reefs

Maximum Size

Up to 80 cm

Lifespan

15+ years with excellent care

Temperament

Predatory and territorial

Difficulty

Advanced

Minimum Tank Size

1000 L

Recommended Tank Size

2000 L or larger

Diet

Carnivore - meaty marine foods: fish, prawn, squid and seafood

Water Temperature

24–26 °C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.020–1.026 specific gravity

Suitable For

Very large fish-only / predator systems

Reef Safe

Not reef safe - eats fish and invertebrates

Plant Safe

Not applicable for marine aquariums

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include other large predators in an oversized system - large angelfish, big tangs, triggers, large wrasses and other groupers too big to be eaten.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with any small or moderate-sized fish, ornamental shrimp and crustaceans, and delicate reef displays.
