Males flush with deep reds and pinks, most vividly when displaying to females. Reaching only around 8 cm, it is a peaceful, hardy splash of colour for almost any established reef.

Natural Habitat

Native to the eastern Indian Ocean, particularly the reefs around Sumatra and the Andaman Sea. It lives over coral-rich slopes and rubble zones, foraging in loose aggregations a little above the reef.

Appearance

A slender wrasse with red to pink flanks marked by fine horizontal lines and colourful, flowing fins. Dominant males intensify dramatically during courtship, while females are a softer orange-red.

Temperament and Compatibility

Peaceful and thoroughly reef-friendly. It mixes well with other calm community fish and can share a larger aquarium with other fairy wrasses, ideally only one male of each species. Being fairly timid, it should not be housed with boisterous or aggressive tank mates that will out-compete it for food.

Feeding

A carnivore. Offer a varied diet of vitamin-enriched frozen mysis and brine shrimp, finely chopped meaty foods and a quality marine flake or pellet, fed at least twice daily to keep its colour and condition up.

Care Requirements

Keep in an established reef of at least 190 litres with generous live rock and open swimming space. Maintain a temperature of 24–26 °C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity of 1.020–1.026. Like all wrasses it is an accomplished jumper, so a tight-fitting lid is essential.

Breeding

Not bred in home aquaria. Fairy wrasses are open-water spawners and captive breeding is not commercially established, so stock is wild-collected.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Cirrhilabrus adornatus

Common Name

Debelius Fairy Wrasse

Origin

Eastern Indian Ocean

Maximum Size

8 cm

Lifespan

5–8 years

Temperament

Peaceful

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

190 litres

Recommended Tank Size

250 litres or larger

Diet

Carnivore

Water Temperature

24–26 °C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.020–1.026

Suitable For

Reef aquarium or FOWLR

Reef Safe

Yes

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

Excellent with other peaceful reef fish such as small tangs, anthias, cardinalfish, clownfish, gobies, other fairy wrasses (different species) and firefish.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid aggressive or predatory tank mates such as large dottybacks, triggerfish, lionfish and groupers, and avoid a second male of the same species in all but the largest tanks.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0972/7236/5347/files/debelius-fairy-wrasse-cirrhi-43090662785315.webp?v=1790305844
https://nicksaquariumoceanariumterrarium.com.au/products/debelius-fairy-wrasse-cirrhilabrus-adornatus
