This is a big, powerful grazer that reaches around 50 cm, so it needs a serious amount of swimming room. A striking centrepiece for a very large reef or FOWLR.

Natural Habitat

Widely distributed across the Indo-Pacific, the Eyestripe Surgeonfish grazes over reef flats and slopes, mowing algae and detritus from rock. In the aquarium it wants long, open swimming lanes and plenty of algae-covered surfaces to graze.

Appearance

A large, oval tang, blue-grey to olive with fine wavy blue lines across the body, a yellow-orange stripe running back from the eye, and a yellow band near the tail base. A sharp scalpel at the tail base is used in defence. Colour deepens as the fish matures and settles.

Temperament and Compatibility

Peaceful towards unrelated fish but semi-aggressive, sometimes strongly so, towards other tangs and its own kind - especially in tight quarters. Keep one per tank unless the system is very large. Its size and scalpel command respect from most tankmates.

Feeding

A herbivore that needs plenty of plant matter. Offer dried nori, marine algae, spirulina and quality herbivore preparations, with occasional meaty foods. Frequent grazing keeps it healthy and reduces aggression.

Care Requirements

Because of its size, provide a minimum of 800 litres, with 2000 litres or more strongly recommended for an adult. Maintain temperature 24–26 °C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity 1.020–1.026. Give it strong, oxygen-rich flow, open swimming space and grazing surfaces. Good water quality is essential for a fish this active.

Breeding

Surgeonfish spawn pelagic eggs in open water and are not bred in home aquariums. The realistic goal is a healthy, well-fed grazer with excellent colour and condition.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Acanthurus dussumieri

Common Name

Dussumieri Tang (Eyestripe Surgeonfish)

Origin

Indo-Pacific reefs

Maximum Size

Up to 50 cm

Lifespan

15+ years with excellent care

Temperament

Semi-aggressive (especially to other tangs)

Difficulty

Advanced

Minimum Tank Size

800 L

Recommended Tank Size

2000 L or larger

Diet

Herbivore - nori, marine algae, spirulina and prepared greens, with some meaty foods

Water Temperature

24–26 °C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.020–1.026 specific gravity

Suitable For

Very large reef and FOWLR aquariums

Reef Safe

Reef safe - grazes algae and generally ignores corals

Plant Safe

Not applicable for marine aquariums

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include angelfish, wrasses, rabbitfish, larger clownfish, and other robust fish in a large system.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with other tangs (unless the tank is very large and they are added together) and very timid fish.
