Marble Queen | Echinodorus cordifolius 'Marble Queen'

Description

Echinodorus cordifolius 'Marble Queen' is a bold, variegated sword whose broad heart-shaped leaves are marbled in green and creamy white, giving it a hand-painted look. It grows large and makes a genuine centrepiece. Sold in a plastic pot.

Natural Habitat

The parent species, Echinodorus cordifolius, comes from the marshes, ditches and slow waters of North and Central America, growing in rich mud and often pushing emersed leaves above the surface. Recreate that with a deep nutritious substrate and stable warmth; it grows submerged but, given the chance, will send leaves out of an open-top tank.

Appearance

Large, broad, heart-shaped leaves patterned with green and cream marbling that intensifies under good light and feeding. It is one of the bigger swords, reaching roughly 30–45 cm submerged and taller still if allowed to grow emersed. The potted plant supplied is a young rosette that sizes up markedly once established.

Placement and Aquascaping

A background centrepiece for larger tanks – give it plenty of room, ideally 100 litres or more, as it will shade neighbours once it fills out. In open-top tanks it can be grown up and out of the water for its emersed leaves and flowers. Trim old outer leaves at the base.

Planting and Propagation

Remove the pot and rockwool and plant in the substrate with the crown just above the surface – never bury it. Push several root tabs in around it. It propagates freely by adventitious plantlets on its flower stalks, and by rhizome division; plantlets are separable once rooted.

Care Requirements

Easy but hungry: moderate to high light keeps the variegation crisp, and CO2 is not required though it supports faster, fuller growth. A heavy root feeder, so a nutrient substrate and regular root tabs are essential; iron helps if leaves pale. Keep water at 22–28 °C, pH 6.5–7.5. Growth is moderate.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Echinodorus cordifolius 'Marble Queen'

Common Name

Marble Queen Radican Sword

Origin

North and Central America (cultivated selection)

Maximum Height

30–45 cm (taller emersed)

Growth Rate

Moderate

Difficulty

Beginner

Placement

Background

Lighting

Moderate

CO2 Requirement

Not required

Fertilisation

Root tabs (heavy root feeder), iron for colour

Water Temperature

22–28 °C

pH Range

6.5–7.5

GH Range

3–15 dGH

Propagation

Adventitious plantlets and rhizome division

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Larger community and planted aquariums from 100 litres

Suitable Tank Mates

Peaceful community fish – tetras, rasboras, gouramis, corydoras and dwarf cichlids – plus shrimp and snails.
