e-ozelot-nile-queen
E. Ozelot Nile Queen | Echinodorus 'Ozelot Nile Queen'

Description

Echinodorus 'Ozelot Nile Queen' is a large, leopard-spotted sword – a bigger, bolder take on the classic Ozelot, with broad leaves dappled in dark reddish-brown spots. It grows into a commanding centrepiece and is as tough as swords come. Sold in a plastic pot.

Natural Habitat

A cultivated Echinodorus hybrid with South American ancestry, so it wants what the genus wants: warm, slow water over a rich, silty root zone. Recreate that with a deep nutritious substrate and stable warmth. It is a true aquatic and grows submerged long-term, developing its clearest spotting under good light and iron.

Appearance

Broad, slightly wavy olive-green leaves marked with dark brown to reddish spots and blotches, giving a leopard-like pattern; new leaves often flush reddish before settling. A large form, reaching roughly 30–50 cm tall with a wide rosette. The potted specimen supplied is a young plant that sizes up considerably and spots more strongly as it establishes.

Placement and Aquascaping

A background centrepiece for larger tanks – give it room, ideally 120 litres or more, as it will shade neighbours once it fills out. Position it where the dappled leaves are the focal point. Trim old outer leaves at the base.

Planting and Propagation

Remove the pot and rockwool and plant in the substrate with the crown just above the surface – never bury it. Add several root tabs alongside. It propagates by adventitious plantlets on flower stalks and by rhizome division, both separable once rooted.

Care Requirements

Easy: moderate to high light with iron sharpens the spots (low light or iron deficiency makes them pale), and CO2 is not required though it speeds growth. A heavy root feeder – use a nutrient substrate, root tabs and iron. Keep water at 22–28 °C, pH 6.5–7.5. Growth is moderate.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Echinodorus 'Ozelot Nile Queen'

Common Name

Ozelot Nile Queen Sword

Origin

Cultivated hybrid (Echinodorus, South American parentage)

Maximum Height

30–50 cm

Growth Rate

Moderate

Difficulty

Beginner

Placement

Background

Lighting

Moderate

CO2 Requirement

Not required

Fertilisation

Root tabs (heavy root feeder), iron for spotting

Water Temperature

22–28 °C

pH Range

6.5–7.5

GH Range

3–15 dGH

Propagation

Adventitious plantlets and rhizome division

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Larger community and planted aquariums from 120 litres

Suitable Tank Mates

Peaceful community fish – tetras, rasboras, gouramis, corydoras and dwarf cichlids – plus shrimp and snails.
