eible-mimic-tang
Eibli Mimic Tang | Acanthurus pyroferus

Description

The Eibli Mimic Tang is a clever surgeonfish famous for its disguise: as a juvenile it mimics the Eibl's dwarf angelfish almost perfectly, then transforms into a sleek chocolate-brown adult. Reaching around 25 cm, it is one of the more manageable tangs and a hardy, characterful choice for a medium to large reef.

Natural Habitat

Found across Indo-Pacific reefs, this surgeonfish grazes over reef flats and slopes for algae and detritus. Its juvenile angelfish mimicry is thought to give it protection and access to grazing areas guarded by dwarf angels. It appreciates open swimming space and plenty of grazing surfaces.

Appearance

Juveniles are golden-yellow (mimicking Centropyge eibli and related dwarf angels), changing as they mature to a chocolate-brown, grey or dark body, often with orange and pale highlights around the head and gills. A tail-base scalpel is used in defence. Colour and pattern shift markedly with age.

Temperament and Compatibility

Generally peaceful for a tang, though it can be assertive toward new tangs or its own kind. Best kept as the only mimic or surgeonfish in a medium tank, or with other tangs only in a large system. Mixes well with most peaceful to semi-aggressive fish.

Feeding

Primarily a herbivore. Offer dried nori, marine algae, spirulina and quality herbivore preparations, with occasional meaty foods for variety. Frequent grazing keeps it healthy and helps prevent coral nipping.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of 300 litres, with 450 litres or more recommended for an adult. Maintain temperature 24–26 °C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity 1.020–1.026. Give it open swimming room, good oxygen-rich flow and grazing surfaces. Hardy and adaptable once settled.

Breeding

Surgeonfish spawn pelagic eggs in open water and are not bred in home aquariums. The realistic goal is a healthy, well-fed grazer with good colour and condition.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Acanthurus pyroferus

Common Name

Eibli Mimic Tang (Chocolate Surgeonfish)

Origin

Indo-Pacific reefs

Maximum Size

25 cm

Lifespan

Up to 15 years with excellent care

Temperament

Peaceful to semi-aggressive

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

300 L

Recommended Tank Size

450 L or larger

Diet

Herbivore - nori, marine algae, spirulina and prepared greens, with some meaty foods

Water Temperature

24–26 °C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.020–1.026 specific gravity

Suitable For

Medium to large reef and FOWLR aquariums

Reef Safe

Reef safe with caution - may nip LPS corals if not kept well fed

Plant Safe

Not applicable for marine aquariums

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include clownfish, wrasses, angelfish, rabbitfish, and most peaceful to semi-aggressive community fish.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with other tangs or surgeonfish in smaller tanks, dwarf angels of the type it mimics in tight quarters, and very aggressive fish.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0972/7236/5347/files/Eible_Mimic_Tang_Acanthurus_tristis_ff856b8f-52be-4d2f-8771-5b813481521c.jpg?v=1781681467
