eight-line-wrasse
Eight Line Wrasse | Pseudocheilinus octotaenia

Description

The Eight Line Wrasse is a small, jewel-toned wrasse patterned with eight fine orange lines over a pinkish body. It is exceptionally hardy and a genuine asset for pest control - but be warned, it is one of the more aggressive small wrasses and is best reserved for robust reef communities.

Natural Habitat

Found across the Indo-Pacific on coral-rich reefs, the Eight Line Wrasse spends its time weaving through rockwork and coral hunting for small invertebrates. It appreciates a mature reef with plenty of live rock, caves and crevices to patrol.

Appearance

A compact, cigar-shaped wrasse, pinkish to lavender with eight neat orange-to-red horizontal lines running the length of the body, and a small dark spot near the tail. A pale bar often marks the face. Adults reach around 14 cm.

Temperament and Compatibility

Hardy and bold, this is one of the most aggressive members of its genus. It will chase and harass smaller, peaceful fish and other wrasses, so it suits busy tanks with confident tankmates of similar size. Keep only one, and add it last so it cannot establish dominance early.

Feeding

A carnivore that is easy to feed and readily hunts pests. Offer mysis, brine, copepods and quality frozen foods. It is valued for eating pyramid snails, some flatworms and bristleworms, though it will also target ornamental shrimp and other small mobile inverts.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of 200 litres, with 280 litres or more recommended. Maintain temperature 24–26 °C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity 1.020–1.026. Offer plenty of live rock for hunting and hiding, and a tight lid, as all wrasses jump. Robust, disease-resistant and long-lived once settled.

Breeding

Like other wrasses it spawns pelagic eggs in the wild and is not bred in home aquariums. The realistic goal is a healthy, active display fish that helps keep pests in check.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Pseudocheilinus octotaenia

Common Name

Eight Line Wrasse

Origin

Indo-Pacific reefs

Maximum Size

14 cm

Lifespan

5–8 years with good care

Temperament

Aggressive / territorial

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

200 L

Recommended Tank Size

280 L or larger

Diet

Carnivore - mysis, brine, copepods and meaty frozen foods; hunts pest snails and worms

Water Temperature

24–26 °C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.020–1.026 specific gravity

Suitable For

Robust reef communities

Reef Safe

Reef safe with caution - coral-safe but will eat ornamental shrimp and other small mobile invertebrates

Plant Safe

Not applicable for marine aquariums

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include tangs, angelfish, larger clownfish, robust wrasses, and other confident fish that can hold their own.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with small timid fish, gobies, firefish, small dartfish, ornamental shrimp, and other small or peaceful wrasses that it will bully.
