electric-yellow-big-female-labidochromis-caeruleus
Electric Yellow BIG FEMALE! | Labidochromis caeruleus

Description

This is a large, well-grown Electric Yellow female in full canary colour — a ready-to-breed centrepiece for a Lake Malawi tank. It brings all the easy charm of the most beginner-friendly mbuna at proper adult size, around 10 cm. Peaceful by mbuna standards and impossibly bright, this female is ideal for setting up a breeding group.

Natural Habitat

Endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa, where it lives among the rocky shoreline habitat, picking food from the rocks and open water. The lake is hard, strongly alkaline and extraordinarily stable, and those conditions need to be closely matched in the aquarium.

Appearance

A bar of pure canary yellow, with striking black edging along the dorsal and pelvic fins. Both sexes are yellow, but males usually show bolder black fin margins, while this female is a fuller-bodied specimen carrying the softer markings typical of a mature hen. Colour is strongest on a good diet in stable, mineral-rich water.

Temperament and Compatibility

One of the most peaceable mbuna, though still a Rift Lake cichlid with a territorial streak, particularly around breeding. It mixes well with other moderately-sized, similarly-tempered Malawi cichlids in a rock-structured tank with enough territories to go around.

Feeding

An omnivore that leans towards small invertebrates and grazing in the wild. Feed a quality cichlid pellet or flake with some vegetable and spirulina content, plus occasional frozen foods. Avoid overfeeding rich, meaty or mammalian foods, which can cause bloat in mbuna.

Care Requirements

Provide plenty of rockwork forming caves and territories, a sandy substrate, and hard, alkaline, well-filtered water kept clean with regular water changes. It is hardy and forgiving of the beginner Rift Lake keeper provided the water chemistry is right and the tank is not overcrowded beyond its filtration.

Breeding

A maternal mouthbrooder. The female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them for around three weeks without eating, then releases free-swimming fry. A well-conditioned female like this one, moved to a quiet tank to brood, gives the best survival of fry.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Labidochromis caeruleus

Common Name

Electric Yellow Cichlid (mature female)

Origin

Lake Malawi, East Africa

Maximum Size

Around 10 cm

Lifespan

6–10 years

Temperament

Semi-aggressive (mild for mbuna)

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

150 litres

Recommended Tank Size

200+ litres

Diet

Omnivore

Water Temperature

24–28 °C

pH Range

7.8–8.6

GH Range

10–20 dGH (hard)

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Lake Malawi mbuna aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Generally (mbuna tanks are usually rock-and-sand)

Suitable Tank Mates

Other peaceful-to-moderate Lake Malawi mbuna and haps of similar size, kept in a well-structured rocky tank with plenty of territories and sharing its hard, alkaline water needs.

Avoid Keeping With

Small community fish, soft-water species, and very aggressive mbuna that will bully it.
