elodea
Elodea

Description

Elodea — correctly Egeria densa — is the classic oxygenating bunch plant: dense whorls of crisp green leaves on long stems that grow fast and soak up nutrients, helping to starve algae in a new or heavily stocked tank. It is about as easy as aquarium plants get, and one of the few that shrugs off cool water. Trim and replant the tops to keep it bushy.

Natural Habitat

Egeria densa is native to the warm-temperate freshwaters of south-eastern South America — Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Chile — where it grows submerged in slow streams, ponds and lakes. It tolerates a wide temperature range, which is why it suits both tropical and coldwater tanks. Give it decent light and it will grow with little fuss in almost any freshwater setup.

Appearance

Long, brittle stems carry whorls of usually four to six narrow, bright-green leaves, giving a full, bottlebrush look. It grows quickly toward the light and can reach the surface, where it will trail. The bunch sold is a set of cut stems ready to plant; new side shoots soon make it bushier.

Placement and Aquascaping

A midground to background bunch plant. Plant the stems in the substrate a couple of centimetres apart, or leave it floating as a fast nutrient sponge and cover for fry. Trim regularly and replant the healthy tops to keep it dense and stop it going leggy and bare at the base.

Planting and Propagation

Remove any band or weight from the bunch and separate the stems. Push each a few centimetres into the substrate, or let them float. Propagation is simply by cuttings — snip a healthy top, strip the lowest leaves, and replant; it roots readily.

Care Requirements

Undemanding under low to moderate lighting; brighter light gives faster, denser growth. CO2 is not required. It feeds mostly from the water column, so liquid fertiliser keeps it lush — heavy, fast growth can strip nutrients in a lean tank. Comfortable across a wide 15–25 °C range, pH 6.5–7.9, soft to hard water. Growth is fast, so expect regular trimming. Note that Egeria can be sensitive to liquid-carbon (glutaraldehyde) supplements, which may cause it to shed leaves. Please dispose of trimmings in the bin — never release aquarium plants into local waterways.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Egeria densa (syn.
