One of the larger corydoras-type catfish at around 8 cm, it is peaceful, hardy and forms a bold, glittering shoal that patrols the bottom of the tank.

Natural Habitat

Widespread across the upper Amazon basin in Peru, Ecuador, Brazil and Bolivia, where it lives over soft substrates in slow rivers, tributaries, ponds and flooded margins. The water is typically soft, warm and slow-moving with plenty of leaf litter and cover.

Appearance

A robust, high-bodied catfish clad in armoured plates, coloured a plain bronze-grey that lights up with a brilliant emerald-to-blue-green sheen along the sides. It is stockier and deeper-bodied than the common corydoras, with an extra ray in the dorsal fin. Females grow noticeably larger and rounder than males.

Temperament and Compatibility

Thoroughly peaceful and sociable. It is a shoaling fish that must be kept in a group of at least six to feel secure and behave naturally. An excellent, gentle companion for most community fish and a diligent, entertaining member of the bottom crew.

Feeding

An omnivorous bottom-feeder. Provide sinking pellets and wafers as a staple, along with frozen and live foods such as bloodworm, tubifex and brine shrimp. Ensure enough food reaches the bottom rather than being taken by faster mid-water fish.

Care Requirements

Give it a soft sandy substrate to protect its delicate barbels, gentle to moderate flow and clean, well-oxygenated water. Smooth sand is far better than sharp gravel. Like all corydoras it occasionally dashes to the surface to gulp air, which is normal behaviour.

Breeding

A group-spawning egg-depositor. In the classic "T-position" the female collects sperm and carries a clutch of eggs in her pelvic fins before sticking them to plants, glass and décor. Cool, clean water changes often trigger spawning; eggs and fry are best reared separately from adults.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Brochis splendens

Common Name

Emerald Green Corydoras (Emerald Catfish)

Origin

Upper Amazon basin, South America

Maximum Size

Around 8 cm

Lifespan

5–8 years

Temperament

Peaceful (schooling)

Difficulty

Beginner

Minimum Tank Size

100 litres

Recommended Tank Size

120+ litres

Diet

Omnivore (bottom-feeder)

Water Temperature

22–26 °C

pH Range

6.0–7.5

GH Range

2–15 dGH (soft to moderately hard)

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Peaceful planted community aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

Peaceful community fish such as tetras, rasboras, danios, dwarf cichlids, gouramis and other corydoras.
