Peaceful, personable and gorgeous, it makes a wonderful centrepiece for a calm, planted community. A labyrinth fish reaching around 7-8cm.

Natural Habitat

Trichogaster lalius (formerly Colisa lalia) comes from the slow, densely-vegetated waters of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and other river systems of India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. These warm, still, plant-choked waters are low in oxygen, which is why the gourami breathes air at the surface using its labyrinth organ.

Appearance

The Flame form is an intense, near-solid red-orange, without the blue barring of the wild type. Males are larger and more vividly coloured with pointed fins; females are smaller, plainer and silvery. A small, disc-shaped anabantoid with a graceful, gliding movement.

Temperament and Compatibility

Generally peaceful and a little shy, though males can be territorial toward other male gouramis and their own kind. Best kept as a single male or a male with a couple of females in a calm community. Avoid keeping multiple males in a small tank.

Feeding

An omnivore. Feed a quality flake or micropellet staple with frozen and live foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia, plus some vegetable-based food. A varied diet keeps colour rich.

Care Requirements

As a labyrinth fish it breathes air from the surface, so a lid and a layer of warm air above the water are important. Provide a well-planted tank with gentle flow — gouramis dislike turbulence — and soft to neutral, warm water. Note that intensively line-bred dwarf gouramis can be prone to Dwarf Gourami Iridovirus and bacterial issues, so buy healthy stock and keep water quality high.

Breeding

A bubble-nesting species. The male builds a floating nest, often incorporating plant matter, entices the female beneath it, and then tends the eggs and fry alone. The female should be removed after spawning. Fry are tiny and need infusoria-grade foods.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Trichogaster lalius

Common Name

Flame Dwarf Gourami

Origin

India, Bangladesh and Pakistan (South Asia)

Maximum Size

Up to about 9 cm

Lifespan

2-4 years

Temperament

Peaceful (males territorial toward other gouramis)

Difficulty

Beginner

Minimum Tank Size

60 litres

Recommended Tank Size

75 litres+, planted

Diet

Omnivore

Water Temperature

24-28°C

pH Range

6.0-7.5

GH Range

4-15 dGH (soft to moderately hard)

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Calm planted community tanks

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

Peaceful community fish such as small rasboras, tetras, corydoras, kuhli loaches, peaceful barbs and small livebearers, in a calm, planted tank.

Avoid Keeping With

Other male dwarf gouramis in small tanks, fin-nippers, and boisterous or aggressive species that will stress this gentle fish.

Size options reflect the sizes we stock; any shown as sold out will return as we restock.
