flametail-blenny
Flametail Blenny | Enchelyurus flavipes

Description

The Flametail Blenny is a small, dark-bodied blenny brightened by a warm yellow to orange flush over the tail and rear, giving it its name. Reaching only around 8 cm, it is a peaceful, hardy little fish that perches on the rocks and darts about among the crevices. It is fully reef safe and makes an appealing, low-demand addition to nano and community reef aquariums.

Natural Habitat

This species comes from the western Pacific, where it lives on coral-rich reefs, perching on rock and coral and retreating into small holes and crevices for shelter. It spends its day picking food from surfaces and the water column and claiming a small home territory. In the aquarium it wants a mature system with plenty of live rock riddled with small holes it can use as refuges, along with stable water and gentle to moderate flow.

Appearance

The body is elongated and largely dark, often deep brown to black, with a distinctive warm yellow to orange wash over the rear body and tail. Like other blennies it has a blunt head with high-set eyes and small tentacle-like cirri, and it perches on its pelvic fins rather than swimming constantly. A healthy specimen perches openly, is alert and feeds readily, with good colour and no signs of a pinched body.

Temperament and Compatibility

Temperament is peaceful, though it can be territorial toward other blennies or similar-looking fish that compete for the same perches and holes. It mixes very well with a wide range of peaceful community fish and is completely reef safe, leaving corals and invertebrates alone. Keep only one Flametail Blenny unless the tank is large, and avoid housing it with aggressive or much larger fish that may intimidate it.

Feeding

This is an omnivore. Offer a varied diet of frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp and finely chopped seafood, alongside algae-based foods and quality marine flakes or small pellets. Several small feeds a day suit its picking style. A mature reef with natural algae film and microfauna provides valuable supplementary grazing between feeds and helps keep it in good condition.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of around 75 L, with 100 L or larger recommended for long-term comfort. Maintain temperature at 24–27°C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity around 1.020–1.026. Gentle to moderate flow, good filtration and stable water quality suit it well, along with plenty of rocky refuges. A secure lid is worthwhile, as blennies can jump. This is a hardy, undemanding fish, suitable for beginners to intermediate keepers.

Breeding

Breeding is uncommon in home aquariums. Blennies typically lay adhesive eggs in a hole or crevice that the male guards, but the tiny larvae are difficult to rear without specialised planktonic foods and dedicated facilities. For most keepers the reward is a settled, characterful blenny perching and defending its little territory rather than raising fry.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Enchelyurus flavipes

Common Name

Flametail Blenny (Yellowfin Blenny)

Origin

Western Pacific coral reefs

Maximum Size

8 cm

Lifespan

3–5 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful (territorial to other blennies)

Difficulty

Beginner to intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

75 L

Recommended Tank Size

100 L or larger

Diet

Omnivore; mysis, brine, algae-based foods and marine flakes

Water Temperature

24–27°C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.020–1.026

Suitable For

Nano, community and reef aquariums

Reef Safe

Reef safe

Plant Safe

Not applicable

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include clownfish, small gobies, cardinalfish, flasher and fairy wrasses, dwarf angels and most peaceful reef-safe community fish, along with corals and invertebrates.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with other blennies in smaller tanks, and with aggressive or much larger fish that may intimidate or outcompete it.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0972/7236/5347/files/flametail-blenny-10266762936611-sp.webp?v=1790313951
