floscopa-scandens-mini-bamboo
Floscopa Mini Bamboo | Floscopa cf. scandens

Description

A curious little plant sold as underwater bamboo, Floscopa cf. scandens forms neat upright shoots with a bamboo-like habit. It is a rewarding stem for aquascapers who can give it strong light and CO2, though it is more at home with its feet wet and its head in the air. We think it is worth a spot in a high-tech midground.

Natural Habitat

Floscopa scandens grows through the swamps and marsh margins of Southeast Asia, mostly emersed or only partly submerged. It is a member of the Commelinaceae family, a relative of the spiderworts. To keep it happily submerged you need to recreate those bright, nutrient-rich wetland conditions: strong light, soft slightly acidic water, a rich substrate and a steady supply of CO2.

Appearance

Slim vertical stems carry pointed lance-shaped leaves in a tidy, tiered arrangement that gives the bamboo look. Submerged it stays fresh green and reaches roughly 30–50 cm, sitting comfortably in the midground to background. The portion sold is a young cutting or in-vitro shoot that will grow upward and can be topped and replanted to bush out.

Placement and Aquascaping

Best used in the midground to background of a planted layout, grouped in a small stand for impact. Plant the stems in substrate a few centimetres apart. It also excels in the transition zone of a paludarium or wabi-kusa, grown emersed where it is far less demanding.

Planting and Propagation

Remove any pot or rockwool and gently separate the stems, then push each into the substrate 3–4 cm apart so it can root. Propagation is by cuttings: snip a healthy shoot and replant it, and it will soon take hold.

Care Requirements

This is a demanding plant underwater. It wants high light, injected CO2 and a nutrient-rich substrate with regular liquid dosing; under low light it drops its lower leaves and thins out. Keep it warm at 22–28 °C in soft, acidic to neutral water. Growth submerged is slow, so watch for algae on older leaves. We will be candid: many keepers find Floscopa far easier grown emersed, and it is not a bulletproof aquatic.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Floscopa cf. scandens

Common Name

Floscopa, Underwater Bamboo, Mini Bamboo

Origin

Southeast Asia

Maximum Height

30–50 cm

Growth Rate

Slow

Difficulty

Advanced

Placement

Midground / Background

Lighting

High

CO2 Requirement

Required

Fertilisation

Rich substrate plus liquid fertiliser

Water Temperature

22–28 °C

pH Range

5.5–7.0

GH Range

Soft, 2–8 dGH

Propagation

Stem cuttings

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

High-tech planted tanks, paludariums and wabi-kusa

Suitable Tank Mates

Small, gentle community fish and shrimp that will not uproot or graze soft new growth suit it well – think small tetras, rasboras, pygmy corydoras and dwarf shrimp.

Avoid Keeping With

Boisterous diggers and herbivores such as large goldfish, most cichlids, silver dollars and crayfish, which will disturb or eat it.
