fox-face-rabbitfish
Fox Face Rabbitfish | Siganus vulpinus

Description

The Foxface Rabbitfish is one of the most popular marine fish in the hobby, a bright lemon-yellow fish with a striking black-and-white striped face. Reaching around 24 cm, it is a peaceful, algae-grazing rabbitfish and a superb natural clean-up crew for reef and fish-only systems. As with all rabbitfish, its dorsal, anal and pelvic spines are venomous, so it should be handled with care.

Natural Habitat

This species is found across the western Pacific, grazing over coral reefs, lagoons and rubble slopes. It feeds on algae throughout the day and shelters in the reef at night. In the aquarium it wants a spacious system with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding, open swimming room and stable water. A mature tank with natural algae growth suits it well and helps keep it well fed and in good colour.

Appearance

The body is a vivid, even lemon-yellow, set off by a boldly patterned black-and-white face with the fox-like snout that gives the group its name. Like other rabbitfish it can rapidly shift to a mottled brown camouflage pattern when stressed or sleeping, which is normal and reverses once it settles. The adult size of around 24 cm should be considered, along with the venomous spines. A healthy specimen grazes actively, holds a full body and shows bright, clean colour.

Temperament and Compatibility

Temperament is peaceful, and the Foxface mixes well with a broad range of community fish. It may squabble with other rabbitfish or foxfaces unless the tank is large, so it is usually kept singly. Its venomous spines are a defence rather than a weapon of aggression, but care is needed during netting and maintenance, as a sting is painful. Most other fish leave it alone thanks to those spines, making it a hardy and confident community member.

Feeding

This is a herbivore that grazes primarily on algae. The staple should be dried seaweed (nori) on a clip plus marine algae and spirulina-based foods, supplemented with quality herbivore pellets and the occasional meaty treat such as mysis. Frequent feeding is important, and a well-fed foxface is far less likely to sample soft corals. Natural algae growth on the rockwork provides valuable ongoing grazing between feeds.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of around 280 L, with 400 L or larger recommended for adult comfort. Maintain temperature at 24–27°C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity around 1.020–1.026. Moderate to strong flow, good filtration and regular water changes suit it well. Provide caves and overhangs for security, as a settled foxface colours up and grazes confidently. This is an intermediate-level fish that is generally very hardy once established, with its venomous spines being the main handling consideration.

Breeding

Breeding is not achieved in the home aquarium. Rabbitfish are broadcast spawners that release eggs and sperm into open water, and their pelagic larvae require specialised planktonic feeds to rear. For the home keeper the focus should be on providing space, a good algae-based diet and stable water rather than attempting to breed this species.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Siganus vulpinus

Common Name

Foxface Rabbitfish

Origin

Western Pacific coral reefs and lagoons

Maximum Size

24 cm

Lifespan

7–10 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful (venomous spines)

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

280 L

Recommended Tank Size

400 L or larger

Diet

Herbivore; marine algae, nori and herbivore preparations

Water Temperature

24–27°C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.020–1.026

Suitable For

Reef and FOWLR systems with grazing room

Reef Safe

Reef safe with caution (may nip soft corals if underfed)

Plant Safe

Not applicable

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include tangs, wrasses, angelfish, clownfish, damselfish and most peaceful to semi-robust reef and FOWLR fish, along with corals if the fish is kept well fed.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with other rabbitfish or foxfaces in smaller tanks, and with very aggressive fish that may harass it or provoke defensive stinging.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0972/7236/5347/files/Foxface_Siganus_vulpinus_99f0303f-9487-493c-9701-b803e292464d.jpg?v=1781681389
