Like all bettas it is a living jewel with real personality, but males must be kept alone as they will fight. A hardy, characterful fish that dazzles for years in a warm, gently-filtered, lidded tank. Sold as an individual, hand-picked fish.

Natural Habitat

Betta splendens originates in the shallow, slow and often oxygen-poor waters of Thailand and neighbouring South-East Asia — rice paddies, ditches, marshes and floodplains. As a labyrinth fish it gulps air from the surface, letting it survive where oxygen is low, which is why a lid and a warm surface layer matter.

Appearance

The Galaxy Koi form shows an irregular, marbled spread of iridescent blues, reds and metallics over a pale base, with speckling reminiscent of a night sky. Fin shape varies by individual. As a marble strain, colour and pattern can shift and develop over the fish's life, so every one is unique.

Temperament and Compatibility

Males are solitary and highly territorial — never house two males together, and avoid long-finned or brightly coloured tankmates that trigger flaring. A single male can be kept alone or, in a larger planted tank, with calm, non-nippy companions. Females are more tolerant of one another.

Feeding

A carnivore. Feed a good-quality betta pellet as the staple, with frozen or live bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp as regular treats. Feed small amounts and avoid overfeeding, as bettas are prone to bloating.

Care Requirements

Provide a heated, gently-filtered tank of at least 5 litres (ideally 20 litres or more), with a snug lid and a warm gap above the water so the labyrinth organ is not chilled. Bettas dislike strong flow. Keep the water warm, clean and stable with regular partial changes.

Breeding

A bubble-nest builder. The male constructs a raft of bubbles at the surface, entices the female beneath it, and wraps around her to fertilise the eggs, which he then tends alone. The pair must be separated after spawning, as the male guards the nest and can turn on the female.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Betta splendens

Common Name

Galaxy Koi Betta (Siamese Fighting Fish)

Origin

South-East Asia (Thailand and neighbouring countries)

Maximum Size

6–7 cm

Lifespan

3–5 years

Temperament

Males solitary (will fight); otherwise peaceful

Difficulty

Beginner

Minimum Tank Size

5 litres (heated and lidded)

Recommended Tank Size

20+ litres

Diet

Carnivore

Water Temperature

24–28 °C

pH Range

6.0–7.5

GH Range

2–15 dGH (soft to medium)

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Warm, planted nano and community aquariums (single male)

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

In a larger planted tank, calm, non-nippy companions such as small rasboras, corydoras, kuhli loaches and snails.
