giant-ambulia
Giant Ambulia | Limnophila aquatica

Description

Giant Ambulia is one of the most graceful background stems you can grow, throwing up soft, feathery whorls of bright green that sway in the current. Given decent light it fills out into a lush green thicket and makes a lovely backdrop for a community tank. It is fast, forgiving and a favourite for cover-loving fish.

Natural Habitat

Limnophila aquatica hails from the still and slow-moving waters of Southeast Asia, growing in ponds, ditches and paddy margins. To bring out its best in the aquarium, give it bright light, warm water and a nutrient-rich substrate; a little CO2 turns good growth into spectacular growth.

Appearance

Each stem is ringed with whorls of finely divided, needle-like leaflets that form soft green pom-poms up the stem. It grows to roughly 30–50 cm and, with strong light, reaches the surface and sends out side shoots to bush out. The bunch or potted portion sold is a young stem or two that will quickly gain height and can be trimmed and replanted to thicken the stand.

Placement and Aquascaping

A classic background plant, best planted in a group at the rear or in the corners where its feathery texture softens hardscape. Leave a few centimetres between stems so light reaches the lower leaves. Trim the tops regularly and replant the cuttings to keep the group dense.

Planting and Propagation

Remove any pot and rockwool, separate the stems and plant each one individually in the substrate. Propagation is simple: cut the top few centimetres of a healthy stem and replant it, and the cutting roots readily while the base sends out new side shoots.

Care Requirements

Undemanding for such a delicate-looking plant. It does best in moderate to high light; CO2 is beneficial rather than essential and noticeably boosts density and colour. It is a hungry plant, so a rich substrate with root tabs and regular liquid dosing keeps it full. Keep water at 22–28 °C, pH 6.0–8.0. Growth is fast, so expect regular trimming; under low light the lower stem tends to go bare.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Limnophila aquatica

Common Name

Giant Ambulia

Origin

Southeast Asia

Maximum Height

30–50 cm

Growth Rate

Fast

Difficulty

Beginner / Intermediate

Placement

Background

Lighting

Moderate to High

CO2 Requirement

Beneficial

Fertilisation

Root tabs plus liquid fertiliser

Water Temperature

22–28 °C

pH Range

6.0–8.0

GH Range

Soft to moderately hard, 3–15 dGH

Propagation

Stem cuttings and side shoots

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Community and planted aquariums, fry and shrimp cover

Suitable Tank Mates

A brilliant plant for peaceful communities – tetras, rasboras, dwarf gouramis, livebearers, corydoras and shrimp all appreciate the feathery cover it provides for fry and shy fish.

Avoid Keeping With

Herbivorous and digging fish such as large goldfish, silver dollars, many cichlids and crayfish will shred or uproot the soft foliage.
