Reaching around 15 cm, it is an easygoing, long-lived labyrinth fish that gulps air at the surface and makes a handsome, undemanding centrepiece for a roomy community tank.

Natural Habitat

The Three-spot Gourami is native to the lowland swamps, ditches, canals and slow rivers of South-East Asia, including the Mekong basin. These are warm, still, often oxygen-poor waters, which is exactly why the fish evolved its labyrinth organ to breathe air directly from the surface.

Appearance

A deep, laterally compressed body with long, thread-like pelvic fins that it uses to "feel" its surroundings. The wild form carries two dark spots on each flank (the eye making the "third"); this golden strain shows a soft gold to honey body with faint darker marbling. Adults reach roughly 12–15 cm, with males slimmer and longer-finned than the rounder females.

Temperament and Compatibility

Generally peaceful and easygoing, though mature males can become territorial, and it may bully much smaller or long-finned tankmates. Best kept singly or as a group in a spacious tank with plants and broken sightlines to spread any squabbling.

Feeding

An easy omnivore. Feed a quality flake or pellet as the staple with frozen and live foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia, plus some vegetable matter or algae-based food. It will also happily pick at aquarium hydra and small pest snails.

Care Requirements

One of the hardiest aquarium fish, tolerant of a wide range of conditions. As a labyrinth breather it must always have access to the surface, so leave a warm, humid air gap beneath a lid to protect its air-breathing organ from cold draughts. Provide gentle flow, planting and some surface cover.

Breeding

A bubble-nesting labyrinth fish and a relatively easy breeder. The male builds a floating nest of bubbles, entices the female beneath it, and then guards the eggs and fry alone. Lowering the water level and raising the temperature helps trigger spawning; remove the female after egg-laying.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Trichopodus trichopterus

Common Name

Golden Gourami (Three-spot / Gold Gourami)

Origin

South-East Asia (Mekong basin and surrounds)

Maximum Size

12–15 cm

Lifespan

4–6 years

Temperament

Peaceful (males can be territorial)

Difficulty

Beginner

Minimum Tank Size

110 litres

Recommended Tank Size

150+ litres

Diet

Omnivore

Water Temperature

22–28 °C

pH Range

6.0–8.0

GH Range

5–19 dGH (soft to hard)

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Spacious, peaceful community aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

Peaceful, similarly sized fish such as larger tetras, rasboras, barbs, rainbowfish, peaceful catfish, loaches and other medium gouramis.

Avoid Keeping With

Very small fish and shrimp that may be eaten, long-finned slow swimmers such as fancy guppies and bettas that could be nipped, and aggressive cichlids that would harass it.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0972/7236/5347/files/Golden_Gourami_fe268fda-081e-483b-b30c-b08cfbb97230.jpg?v=1781700340
