Unlike most bottom-hugging blennies, the Midas hovers and swims freely in the water column with an almost eel-like grace, darting back to a favourite rocky hole at the first sign of trouble. Reaching around 13 cm, it is hardy, characterful and reef safe, making it an excellent choice for beginners and experienced keepers alike. Its bright colour and inquisitive, bug-eyed face give it real personality.

Natural Habitat

Ecsenius midas is found across the Indo-Pacific and Red Sea on coral reefs, where it shelters in small holes and crevices in the rock and darts out to feed on drifting plankton. It often mimics and swims among schools of anthias (fairy basslets), sharing their colour and behaviour to blend in. In the aquarium it needs plenty of live rock riddled with small caves and holes that it can claim as home bases and bolt-holes.

Appearance

The Midas Blenny has a slender, elongate body of rich golden-yellow, sometimes with a bluish sheen around the large, expressive eyes. The tail is lyre-shaped, and the continuous dorsal fin runs the length of the back. Colour can vary with mood and surroundings, occasionally taking on a greyer or bluish cast. Healthy specimens are alert and active, hover confidently in the open once settled, and show bright, even colour with clear eyes and full bodies.

Temperament and Compatibility

Temperament is generally peaceful, with a mildly mischievous streak. The Midas Blenny mixes well in a reef community and is safe with corals and invertebrates, but it can be territorial towards other blennies and may occasionally nip at or harass small planktivores, firefish or gobies, particularly in smaller tanks. As a rule it is a good community citizen. Keep only one per tank unless the aquarium is large, and avoid housing it with very similar blennies.

Feeding

Feeding is easy, which is part of this fish's appeal. Unusually for a blenny, the Midas is an omnivore rather than a dedicated algae grazer, feeding largely on zooplankton in the wild. Offer a varied diet of enriched mysis, vitamin-soaked brine shrimp, finely chopped meaty foods and quality marine flake or pellet, along with some vegetable matter or nori if natural algae is limited. It feeds readily from the water column and quickly learns mealtimes.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum aquarium of around 110 L, with more space appreciated and needed if kept with other blennies. Maintain temperature at 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4 and salinity around 1.020-1.026. The single most important requirement is plenty of live rock with small holes and crevices for shelter, as the fish relies on these bolt-holes to feel secure. Moderate flow and standard marine or reef lighting suit it well. A secure lid is sensible, as active blennies can jump. This is a hardy, forgiving fish ideal for newer marine keepers.

Breeding

Breeding is occasionally reported in the aquarium. Midas Blennies lay adhesive eggs in a crevice or hole, which the male guards until they hatch, but the tiny planktonic larvae are challenging to rear and require dedicated systems and live foods. For most keepers the reward is simply watching this bold, personable fish hover and interact, rather than any attempt at breeding.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Ecsenius midas

Common Name

Golden Midas Blenny (Persian Blenny)

Origin

Indo-Pacific and Red Sea coral reefs

Maximum Size

13 cm

Lifespan

4-6 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful (can be territorial to other blennies)

Difficulty

Beginner

Minimum Tank Size

110 L

Recommended Tank Size

150 L or larger

Diet

Omnivore; meaty foods, plankton and some algae

Water Temperature

24-27°C

pH Range

8.1-8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.020-1.026

Suitable For

Reef and fish-only community aquariums

Reef Safe

Reef safe

Plant Safe

Not applicable

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include clownfish, small wrasses, gobies, cardinalfish, anthias, dwarf angels and other peaceful reef community fish, along with corals and ornamental invertebrates.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with other blennies of similar shape in smaller tanks, very timid planktivores or firefish it may harass, and large aggressive fish that could intimidate or eat it.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0972/7236/5347/files/Golden_Midas_Blenny_Ecsenius_midas_aa95d580-9c3d-4302-8c0d-546fe426d70d.jpg?v=1781681147
