It perches on coral and rock with an upturned, froggy face, hopping from branch to branch and watching the world with obvious curiosity. Full of personality despite its size, it is an endearing and popular little character.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eNatural Habitat\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eGobiodon histrio is found across the Indo-Pacific, living almost exclusively within the branches of Acropora and other branching stony corals, which provide shelter, hunting perches and spawning sites. It seldom leaves the safety of the coral, darting between branches to snatch tiny prey. In the aquarium it thrives in a mature reef with branching corals or, failing that, rockwork with plenty of small perches and crevices among which to make its home.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eAppearance\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe body is short, stout and scaleless, in a bright lime to emerald green, sometimes with fine reddish or orange lines radiating across the face. The eyes are large and the mouth upturned, giving the classic clown-goby expression. Like other Gobiodon, it secretes a bitter, mildly toxic mucus over its skin that deters predators from eating it. Healthy specimens are alert, perch confidently in the open on coral or rock, and show bright, even colour with a rounded belly.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eTemperament and Compatibility\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eTemperament is peaceful but timid. The Green Coral Goby is no threat to other fish and generally ignores tankmates, but it is a poor competitor for food and can be bullied or outcompeted by boisterous species. It is best kept in a calm community or nano reef. Several can sometimes be kept together in a larger tank with plenty of coral, though they may squabble over prime branches. It is safe with ornamental shrimp and other invertebrates.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eFeeding\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eFeeding requires a little care because of the fish's tiny mouth. Offer small meaty foods such as enriched baby brine shrimp, cyclops, finely chopped mysis, copepods and small frozen preparations, ideally several times a day. New arrivals often prefer live foods at first and can usually be weaned onto small frozen items over time. A mature tank with a natural supply of copepods and other micro-prey greatly helps, especially while the fish is settling in.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eCare Requirements\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eProvide a minimum aquarium of around 40 L, which makes this an ideal nano and reef fish. Maintain temperature at 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4 and salinity around 1.020-1.026. Branching corals are the preferred home, but plenty of rockwork with small perches and crevices will also suit. Gentle to moderate flow and stable water conditions are ideal. Because it is so small and retiring, avoid housing it with anything large or aggressive enough to eat or harass it. In the right calm setup it is hardy and long-lived for its size.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eBreeding\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eGreen Coral Gobies pair readily and will spawn among coral branches in the aquarium, laying small clutches of eggs that the parents guard. When spawning, they may nip a few polyps from the base of a coral branch to clear a laying site, though the damage is minor and corals soon recover.
