You are buying the exact coral in the photo.

Description

AA002 is a Green Star Polyp (Briareum sp.), a hardy encrusting soft coral that spreads as a purple mat studded with bright green, star shaped polyps. Encrusting simply means it creeps flat across a surface rather than branching upward. It is one of the easiest corals to keep and one of the fastest to grow, which is both the appeal and the thing to watch.

Natural Habitat

Briareum grows on reef flats and slopes throughout the Indo-Pacific, spreading over dead coral rock and rubble under moderate light and moderate water movement. Give AA002 the same in the tank: a low to mid position, moderate light, and enough flow to keep detritus from settling on the mat.

Appearance

The base is a purple to mauve leathery mat that creeps across rock. From it rise polyps with eight feathery tentacles each, usually vivid green, opening into a carpet of small stars through the day. A healthy colony has most of its polyps out. A mat that stays shut for more than a day or two is telling you something in the water has shifted.

Keeping It In Check

Green Star Polyp spreads roughly a centimetre a month in good conditions and will grow over neighbouring corals, rock and even glass. It carries no sweeper tentacles, the long stinging tentacles some corals use to burn their neighbours, so it does not attack what it reaches. It simply covers it. The simple answer is to keep it on its own rock or an island of rubble surrounded by sand, rather than fixing it to the main aquascape.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0972/7236/5347/files/GS9030002_dff59dd7-3d3f-42c1-a849-3cad6a08a8f1.jpg?v=1788410711
