hairgrass-in-pot
Hairgrass In Pot | Eleocharis parvula

Description

Dwarf Hairgrass is the go-to grassy carpet – fine, needle-thin blades that spread by runners into a flowing green lawn. Given good light this compact species stays low and forms a meadow you will want to run your fingers through. It is more forgiving than the tiny-leaved carpets, making it a great first carpeting plant.

Natural Habitat

Eleocharis parvula is a small, widespread marsh and shallow-water species growing in the wet margins of lakes, ponds and estuaries around much of the world. In the aquarium it wants bright, open light over a soft, nutrient-rich substrate so its runners can travel and knit together into a carpet.

Appearance

Slim, bright green blades rise from creeping runners and stay short and lawn-like, typically around 5–10 cm. Supplied as a potted clump, which you divide into many small tufts to plant out; each tuft spreads sideways to fill the gaps over the following weeks. It stays lower and finer than its larger cousin Eleocharis acicularis.

Placement and Aquascaping

A foreground carpeting plant, lovely for open lawns and grassy banks. Split the pot into small portions and plant them a couple of centimetres apart across the substrate. Trim the tips to encourage denser, lower growth and to keep the meadow even.

Planting and Propagation

Remove the pot and rockwool, rinse, and separate into small tufts of a few blades each, then plant each tuft with tweezers so the white bases sit just in the substrate. It propagates by runners, sending out horizontal shoots that pop up as new plants and gradually carpet the area.

Care Requirements

Wants moderate to high light to carpet tightly; in low light it grows tall and sparse instead. CO2 is beneficial rather than essential and dramatically speeds a dense carpet – expect a few weeks with CO2 versus a couple of months without. It is a root feeder, so use root tabs in a nutrient-rich substrate. Keep water at 18–26 °C, pH 6.0–7.5. Growth is moderate.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Eleocharis parvula

Common Name

Dwarf Hairgrass

Origin

Widespread (cosmopolitan wetland species)

Maximum Height

5–10 cm

Growth Rate

Moderate

Difficulty

Intermediate

Placement

Foreground

Lighting

Moderate to High

CO2 Requirement

Beneficial

Fertilisation

Root tabs (root feeder) in nutrient-rich substrate

Water Temperature

18–26 °C

pH Range

6.0–7.5

GH Range

Soft to moderate, 2–12 dGH

Propagation

Runners

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Planted tanks and aquascapes, first-time carpeters

Suitable Tank Mates

Small, peaceful fish and shrimp that leave the carpet in peace – tetras, rasboras, corydoras, otocinclus and dwarf shrimp, which also graze algae from young blades.

Avoid Keeping With

Diggers and uprooters such as goldfish, most cichlids, substrate-sifting loaches and crayfish, which tear up newly planted tufts before the runners take hold.

Australian-grown aquarium plants for in-store collection or local delivery.
