high-fin-bronze-corydoras-osteogaster-aeneus
High Fin Bronze Corydoras | Osteogaster aenea

Description

The High Fin Bronze Corydoras is a long-finned form of one of the most bombproof catfish in the hobby, glowing coppery blue-green under the lights with an extended, sail-like dorsal fin. Peaceful, sociable and endlessly busy along the bottom, it is a perfect first cory — just always keep it in a group. It reaches around 6–7 cm.

Natural Habitat

The bronze cory is found very widely across South America, from Colombia and Venezuela south to Argentina, in slow, shallow streams, ditches and pond margins over soft mud and sand. It lives in large groups, foraging in the substrate for small foods.

Appearance

A rounded, armour-plated catfish in metallic bronze to blue-green, with a paler belly and the two rows of bony plates typical of the genus. The "high fin" form carries a noticeably taller, longer dorsal fin than the standard bronze. Females are larger and rounder-bodied than the slimmer males.

Temperament and Compatibility

Completely peaceful and highly social. Keep a group of at least six, ideally more, so they forage and rest together confidently. An excellent, gentle bottom-dweller for almost any community tank.

Feeding

An omnivorous bottom-feeder. Feed sinking pellets, wafers and tablets along with frozen and live foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp. It is a scavenger, but should be fed directly rather than left to rely on leftovers.

Care Requirements

Provide a tank of 60 litres or more with a soft sand or smooth-gravel substrate to protect its delicate barbels, plus shade and planting. It is hardy and adaptable across soft to neutral water. Good water quality and clean substrate keep the barbels healthy, and it appreciates the occasional dash to the surface for a gulp of air.

Breeding

One of the easier cories to spawn. Well-fed groups spawn after a cool water change, the female carrying eggs in a pelvic "basket" and depositing them on glass and plants in the classic T-position. Eggs hatch in a few days; remove adults or eggs, as the fry are best raised separately on infusoria and baby brine shrimp.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Osteogaster aenea (formerly Corydoras aeneus)

Common Name

High Fin Bronze Corydoras

Origin

Widespread across South America

Maximum Size

6–7 cm

Lifespan

5–10 years

Temperament

Peaceful (schooling)

Difficulty

Beginner

Minimum Tank Size

60 litres

Recommended Tank Size

90+ litres

Diet

Omnivore (sinking pellets, wafers, live/frozen foods)

Water Temperature

22–28 °C

pH Range

6.0–7.8

GH Range

2–18 dGH (soft to medium-hard)

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Beginner and planted community aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

Almost any peaceful community fish — tetras, rasboras, danios, livebearers, dwarf gouramis, peaceful dwarf cichlids and other small catfish.
