humpnose-unicornfish
Humpnose Unicornfish | Naso tonganus

Description

The Humpnose Unicornfish is a large, impressive surgeonfish that develops a rounded bulbous forehead and grazes constantly across the reef. It brings size, movement and grazing power to a very large reef or FOWLR system. Be aware that this is a big fish — adults can reach around 60 cm — so it is a long-term commitment that needs a genuinely large aquarium and only suits experienced keepers.

Natural Habitat

This species ranges across the Indo-Pacific on outer reef slopes and drop-offs, where it grazes on algae and drifting plankton in open water. It is an active, roaming fish that covers large distances over the reef. In the aquarium it needs a great deal of open swimming space, mature live rock with grazing surfaces, and strong, oxygen-rich water movement.

Appearance

The body is deep and powerful, generally grey to olive, with the characteristic swollen "humpnose" forehead developing in adults and paired keeled scutes on the tail base. Colours can intensify or pale with mood. Adult size of around 60 cm should be firmly in mind before purchase. Healthy specimens are alert, actively grazing, with good body weight, clear eyes and no signs of the white spot to which tangs are prone.

Temperament and Compatibility

Temperament is generally peaceful toward other fish but semi-aggressive toward other tangs and unicornfish, so it is best kept singly unless the system is enormous. It mixes well with large angels, wrasses, groupers and other big, robust reef or FOWLR fish. Its scalpel-like tail spines can inflict injury, so handle with care. Give it plenty of room to avoid tension with similar species.

Feeding

This is primarily a herbivore that also takes some meaty foods. Provide plenty of marine algae and dried nori, along with a quality herbivore or omnivore preparation, spirulina, and occasional meaty frozen foods such as mysis. Frequent grazing opportunities keep it healthy and help prevent aggression and disease. A constant supply of algae is far better than one large daily feeding.

Care Requirements

Provide a very large aquarium — a minimum of around 2000 L for this active, fast-growing fish. Maintain temperature at 24–27°C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity around 1.020–1.026. Strong flow, excellent oxygenation, powerful filtration and pristine water are essential. Tangs are prone to ich when stressed, so stable conditions and good nutrition are key. This species is reef safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates.

Breeding

The Humpnose Unicornfish is not bred in home aquariums. Like other surgeonfish it is a broadcast spawner producing pelagic eggs and larvae that require open-ocean conditions and specialised culture. Captive breeding is not achievable in the hobby, so the focus should be on space, nutrition and long-term health.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Naso tonganus

Common Name

Humpnose Unicornfish (Bulbnose Unicornfish, Tonganus Tang)

Origin

Indo-Pacific outer reef slopes and drop-offs

Maximum Size

60 cm

Lifespan

10+ years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful (semi-aggressive to other tangs)

Difficulty

Advanced

Minimum Tank Size

2000 L

Recommended Tank Size

3000 L or larger

Diet

Herbivore; marine algae, nori and some meaty foods

Water Temperature

24–27°C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.020–1.026

Suitable For

Very large reef and FOWLR systems

Reef Safe

Yes

Plant Safe

Not applicable

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include large angelfish, wrasses, groupers, other robust reef or FOWLR fish and, in very large systems, dissimilar tangs.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with other unicornfish or similar tangs in anything but a huge system, and any tank that cannot provide the swimming room this large fish demands.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0972/7236/5347/files/Humpnose_Unicornfish_Naso_tonganus_2826c0c0-7370-4fa9-a28e-64305532262f.jpg?v=1781681469
