Peaceful, hardy and endlessly active, it is one of the easier fairy wrasses and an excellent first reef wrasse.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eNatural Habitat\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eCirrhilabrus rubriventralis comes from the western Indian Ocean and Red Sea, where it lives in loose groups over rubble slopes and the outer edges of coral reefs. It feeds on tiny zooplankton drifting in the water column and shelters among rock at night in a mucus cocoon. In the aquarium it appreciates live rock with crevices, some open water for swimming and calmer resting areas.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eAppearance\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eMales are the show-stoppers, with a red to orange body, a pale to reddish belly, fine blue lines and an elongated first dorsal ray. Females are smaller and more subdued in red-pink. Colour intensifies as males display or establish a hierarchy. A healthy fish is plump through the body, alert and swimming actively rather than hiding.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eTemperament and Compatibility\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis is a peaceful, mild-mannered wrasse that will not bother corals or invertebrates and mixes well with most reef fish. Males may spar with other fairy wrasses, so introduce different Cirrhilabrus together or keep one male with a group of females. It combines beautifully with clownfish, gobies, small tangs, anthias and other peaceful community fish.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eFeeding\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eA zooplankton feeder that does best on frequent small meals. Offer vitamin-enriched mysis and brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and quality frozen and pellet foods two to three times daily. Regular feeding keeps its colour vivid and its condition strong.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eCare Requirements\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eProvide a minimum aquarium of around 110 L, with 200 L or larger recommended, especially for a harem. Maintain temperature at 24–26°C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity around 1.020–1.026. Moderate flow, plenty of rockwork and stable water suit it well. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as fairy wrasses are notorious jumpers.
