ludwigia-glandulosa
Ludwigia Glandulosa | Ludwigia glandulosa

Description

Ludwigia glandulosa is one of the richer red-purple stem plants, its narrow leaves deepening to burgundy and near-violet when it is given what it wants. That colour comes at a price – it needs bright light, iron and ideally CO2 to hold its tones – so we count it among the more rewarding, rather than the easiest, plants we stock.

Natural Habitat

Ludwigia glandulosa is native to the south-eastern United States, growing in swamps, ditches and slow, shallow waters, both emersed on wet margins and submerged. In the aquarium it recreates that setting in warm, well-lit, nutrient-rich water, and its best colour appears under strong light with plenty of iron available.

Appearance

A healthy plant carries slim, lance-shaped leaves on an upright stem, green-bronze in modest conditions and turning deep red, purple and violet under strong light and good nutrition. It reaches around 20–40 cm tall and looks most effective planted in a bold group. The portion supplied, often a clean tissue culture, is a young stem or plantlets that will root and colour up as conditions allow.

Placement and Aquascaping

A background plant, or a midground highlight in a smaller tank. Plant several stems together for a striking splash of colour, spacing them enough that light reaches the lower leaves. Trim and replant the coloured tops to keep the group dense and vivid.

Planting and Propagation

Rinse any tissue-culture gel or remove rockwool, separate the stems, and plant each individually in the substrate. It propagates from cuttings – snip the top few centimetres and replant it, and the base will branch into new shoots. Keep the stems upright and well lit while they establish.

Care Requirements

This one earns its keep with effort. High light is needed to bring out and hold the red-purple colour; under low light it reverts to plain green. CO2 is not strictly required but is strongly beneficial for growth and colour, and iron-rich liquid fertiliser is important – without enough iron and light, the colour fades. Keep it at 22–28 °C, pH around 6.0–7.2, in soft to moderately hard water. Growth is moderate.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Ludwigia glandulosa

Common Name

Cylindric-fruited Ludwigia

Origin

South-eastern United States

Maximum Height

20–40 cm

Growth Rate

Moderate

Difficulty

Intermediate

Placement

Background / Midground

Lighting

High

CO2 Requirement

Beneficial

Fertilisation

Iron-rich liquid fertiliser (water column feeder)

Water Temperature

22–28 °C

pH Range

6.0–7.2

GH Range

4–12 dGH

Propagation

Stem cuttings

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

High-light planted tanks and aquascapes

Suitable Tank Mates

Happy among peaceful community fish – small tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids and livebearers – and with shrimp, which graze harmlessly over the leaves.
