Its oval leaves run from olive-green on top to warm red-copper underneath, deepening across the whole plant under good light. Hardy, adaptable and quick to fill a background, it gives colour without demanding the high-tech setup that fussier reds insist on.

Natural Habitat

Ludwigia repens is native to North and Central America, growing in ponds, ditches and slow streams, both emersed on damp margins and fully submerged. In the aquarium it recreates that setting easily in warm, well-lit water, and colours up best when light is strong and iron is available.

Appearance

A healthy plant carries rounded to oval leaves in opposite pairs up a firm stem, green above and reddish beneath, reddening overall in bright light. It reaches around 20–50 cm tall and is most effective planted in a group. The portion supplied is a young stem or stems that root readily and gain colour and height as they settle.

Placement and Aquascaping

A background plant, or a midground accent in a smaller tank, striking planted in a loose group where the red tones show. Space stems for light penetration, and trim and replant the tops to keep the group bushy; regular topping encourages side shoots and a fuller stand.

Planting and Propagation

Remove any pot or rockwool and plant each stem individually in the substrate, a little apart. Propagate from cuttings – snip the top few centimetres and replant it, and the base will branch. Trimmings root quickly, so a single plant soon becomes many.

Care Requirements

Forgiving for a red plant: it grows under moderate light and colours best under high light. CO2 is not required but is beneficial, and an iron-rich liquid fertiliser deepens the reds. Keep it at 20–28 °C, pH around 5.5–8.0, in soft to moderately hard water. Growth is moderate to fast; without enough light it stays green and can grow leggy, which is normal rather than a fault.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Ludwigia repens

Common Name

Creeping Primrose-willow, Red Ludwigia

Origin

North & Central America

Maximum Height

20–50 cm

Growth Rate

Moderate to Fast

Difficulty

Beginner to Intermediate

Placement

Background / Midground

Lighting

Moderate to High

CO2 Requirement

Beneficial

Fertilisation

Iron-rich liquid fertiliser (water column feeder)

Water Temperature

20–28 °C

pH Range

5.5–8.0

GH Range

3–15 dGH

Propagation

Stem cuttings

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Beginner planted tanks wanting colour, community tanks, aquascapes

Suitable Tank Mates

An easy fit with community fish – tetras, rasboras, barbs, livebearers, gouramis and peaceful cichlids – and with shrimp, which graze harmlessly over the leaves.
