magnificent-fox-face-rabbitfish
Magnificent Fox Face Rabbitfish | Siganus magnificus

Description

The Magnificent Foxface is a strikingly marked rabbitfish and one of the best natural algae-grazers for a larger reef. Crisp white and black with a bright yellow dorsal and tail, it is a hardy, peaceful fish that reaches around 24 cm. A word of caution: like all foxfaces, its dorsal, pelvic and anal spines carry venom, so handle it and the tank with care.

Natural Habitat

Siganus magnificus is found in the eastern Indian Ocean around the Andaman Sea and nearby reefs, grazing algae over coral-rich slopes and lagoons. It is a daytime browser that shelters in the rock at night, often losing colour and showing a mottled camouflage pattern when resting or stressed. In the aquarium it wants open swimming space, live rock for grazing and shelter.

Appearance

A tall-bodied rabbitfish, clean white and black on the forebody with a vivid yellow rear, dorsal fin and tail, and the elongated tube-like snout typical of foxfaces. At night or under stress the colours fade to a blotchy brown. A healthy fish is full-bodied, alert and grazing actively, with bright, even colour when settled.

Temperament and Compatibility

Generally peaceful and a little shy at first, it settles into a confident grazer. It rarely troubles other fish and its venomous spines mean most tankmates leave it alone. Keep just one foxface or rabbitfish per tank unless the system is very large, and house it with peaceful to semi-aggressive reef fish such as tangs, wrasses, clownfish and angelfish.

Feeding

Primarily a herbivore. Offer dried marine algae and nori on a clip, algae-based flakes and pellets, and prepared herbivore foods, with regular access to algae to graze. A well-fed foxface is far less likely to sample corals. Occasional meaty treats are fine but the diet should stay mostly plant based.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum aquarium of around 380 L, with 470 L or larger recommended for an adult. Maintain temperature at 24–27°C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity around 1.020–1.026. Moderate to strong flow, open swimming areas and mature live rock suit it well. It is reef safe with caution: usually coral-safe when well fed, but a hungry foxface may nip at large-polyp stony corals, soft corals or macroalgae. Take care with the venomous spines during netting and maintenance.

Breeding

Breeding is not achieved in home aquaria. Rabbitfish are open-water spawners whose larvae drift as plankton for an extended period, requiring specialised conditions well beyond aquarium keeping. Keepers should focus on good herbivorous feeding, a large stable system and low stress.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Siganus magnificus

Common Name

Magnificent Foxface Rabbitfish

Origin

Eastern Indian Ocean; Andaman Sea reefs

Maximum Size

24 cm

Lifespan

Up to 8–10 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful (venomous spines)

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

380 L

Recommended Tank Size

470 L or larger

Diet

Herbivore; marine algae, nori and algae-based prepared foods

Water Temperature

24–27°C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.020–1.026

Suitable For

Larger reef and FOWLR systems

Reef Safe

Reef safe with caution

Plant Safe

Not applicable

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include tangs, wrasses, clownfish, angelfish, cardinalfish and other peaceful to semi-aggressive reef fish.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with other foxfaces or rabbitfish in all but very large systems, and with highly aggressive fish.
