Reaching only about 3–4 cm, it is peaceful and inexpensive, but it does best in soft, stable water and a good-sized group. Kept well, a large shoal is a genuinely spectacular sight.

Natural Habitat

Neon tetras come from the blackwater and clearwater streams of the upper Amazon basin in Peru, Colombia and Brazil. These shaded forest waters are very soft, acidic and tannin-stained, filled with leaf litter, roots and submerged wood.

Appearance

A small, torpedo-shaped fish reaching around 3–4 cm. The famous iridescent blue-green stripe runs from the nose to the adipose fin, with a bright red band along the rear half of the body. The similar cardinal tetra differs in having red running the full length of the body. Females are slightly plumper, which can bend the blue line a touch.

Temperament and Compatibility

Peaceful and social, neon tetras should be kept in a shoal of at least six, and ideally ten or more, which keeps them confident and shows off their colour. They mix beautifully in a calm community and spend their time in the middle of the tank.

Feeding

An easy-going omnivore with a small mouth. They take good-quality flake and micro pellets readily, and relish small live or frozen foods such as daphnia, baby brine shrimp and micro bloodworm.

Care Requirements

While hardy once settled, neon tetras dislike sudden changes and are best added to a mature, well-planted, stable aquarium with soft, slightly acidic water and gentle flow. They can be prone to "neon tetra disease," so avoid stressed or sickly stock and quarantine where possible. Dark substrate and planting bring out their best colour.

Breeding

Egg-scattering and not easy to breed. Spawning requires very soft, acidic water, dim light and fine-leaved plants or mops; the adults eat the eggs and must be removed after spawning, and the light-sensitive eggs and fry need shade. It is a rewarding challenge for the dedicated hobbyist.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Paracheirodon innesi

Common Name

Neon Tetra

Origin

Upper Amazon basin – Peru, Colombia and Brazil

Maximum Size

Around 3–4 cm

Lifespan

5–8 years (often 2–5 in aquaria)

Temperament

Peaceful, shoaling

Difficulty

Beginner

Minimum Tank Size

40 litres for a shoal

Recommended Tank Size

60 litres or larger

Diet

Omnivore (micro) – flake, micro pellets, small live and frozen foods

Water Temperature

20–26 °C

pH Range

5.0–7.0

GH Range

1–10 dGH (soft)

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Peaceful, soft-water planted community aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes – completely plant safe

Suitable Tank Mates

Other peaceful community fish – rasboras, other small tetras, corydoras, dwarf gouramis, honey gouramis, rams and Otocinclus.
