orange-spot-rabbitfish
Orange Spot Rabbitfish | Siganus guttatus

Description

The Orange Spot Rabbitfish is a large, peaceful algae-grazer marked with a scattering of glowing gold-orange spots over a dusky body. It is an excellent, hardy clean-up herbivore for a big reef or FOWLR aquarium. Adults are substantial fish, reaching around 42 cm, so plan for plenty of room.

Natural Habitat

Siganus guttatus ranges through the Indo-West Pacific, often around coastal reefs, mangroves and estuaries where it grazes filamentous and leafy algae. It tolerates a range of conditions but does best in a mature aquarium with generous swimming space, live rock for grazing and stable water quality.

Appearance

The body is grey-brown to golden, densely covered in bright orange-gold spots, with a distinctive yellow blotch near the rear of the dorsal fin. Like all rabbitfish it has small, rabbit-like grazing jaws. Importantly, the dorsal, anal and pelvic spines are venomous and can deliver a painful sting, so handle with great care and never bare-handed.

Temperament and Compatibility

This is one of the more peaceful large marine fish and rarely bothers tank mates. It coexists well with tangs, angelfish, wrasse, clownfish and other community reef fish. Like most rabbitfish it may squabble with its own kind unless the tank is very large, so it is usually best kept singly.

Feeding

Primarily a herbivore. Offer dried seaweed (nori) on a clip daily, plus spirulina and algae-based preparations, and some meaty foods such as mysis for variety. A well-fed rabbitfish is far less likely to sample corals, and a steady algae supply keeps its colour and condition strong.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of 450 L, with 600 L or larger recommended for this big, active grazer. Maintain temperature at 24–27°C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity 1.023–1.025. Give it moderate flow, good oxygenation, open swimming room and live rock. Take care during netting and maintenance because of the venomous spines.

Breeding

Breeding is not practical in the home aquarium. Rabbitfish are pelagic spawners with tiny planktonic larvae that require specialised commercial rearing. Focus on a spacious, stable system and good nutrition rather than breeding.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Siganus guttatus

Common Name

Orange Spot Rabbitfish

Origin

Indo-West Pacific coastal reefs, mangroves and estuaries

Maximum Size

42 cm

Lifespan

8–10+ years

Temperament

Peaceful (venomous spines — handle with care)

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

450 L

Recommended Tank Size

600 L or larger

Diet

Herbivore; marine algae, dried seaweed (nori), spirulina preparations and some meaty foods

Water Temperature

24–27°C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.023–1.025

Suitable For

Larger reef aquariums and FOWLR systems with swimming room

Reef Safe

Reef safe with caution; generally safe if well fed, but may nip LPS or soft corals if underfed

Plant Safe

Not applicable for marine fish

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include tangs, angelfish, wrasse, clownfish, cardinalfish, larger gobies and other robust, peaceful reef fish.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with other rabbitfish in smaller tanks and with very aggressive species that may harass it.
