Peaceful, adaptable and endlessly active, it is a charming nano shoaler drawn straight from our own backyard streams. It stays tiny at around 3–5 cm and makes a delightful, animated centrepiece for a planted or native tank — though keepers should know it is naturally short-lived.

Natural Habitat

Pseudomugil signifer is widespread along Australia's eastern seaboard, from Queensland to Victoria, in coastal streams, estuaries and creeks. It is remarkably adaptable and tolerates a range of conditions, including slightly brackish water in tidal reaches, which is why it copes well across soft to moderately hard, neutral water in the aquarium.

Appearance

A small, semi-transparent fish with a silvery body and the brilliant blue eye ring that gives it its name. Males are showier, with larger, more colourful yellow-and-black-edged fins that they flick and flare during displays. Colour and finnage are shown off best when a group of males compete for attention.

Temperament and Compatibility

Peaceful and sociable, it should be kept in a shoal of eight or more, ideally with several males so their sparring displays can be enjoyed. It suits calm nano and native community tanks and will not trouble tankmates, but its small size means it should not be mixed with larger fish that might eat or bully it.

Feeding

A micropredator with a small, upturned mouth suited to tiny foods. Feed small flake and micro-pellets as a base, with live and frozen daphnia, brine shrimp, mosquito larvae and similar small foods to bring out colour and condition. Frequent small feeds suit its fast metabolism.

Care Requirements

Provide at least 45–60 litres (75 litres-plus for a larger group), well planted with gentle flow and stable, clean water. It is undemanding on chemistry but appreciates good water quality and a mature tank. It is rated intermediate mainly because it is short-lived, best kept in groups, and its small fry can be tricky to raise.

Breeding

Pacific Blue-Eyes are continuous egg-scatterers that deposit small adhesive eggs among fine plants and mops over several days. The eggs hatch in one to two weeks and the tiny fry need infusoria and very fine foods at first. In a well-planted tank a few fry often survive alongside the parents.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Pseudomugil signifer

Common Name

Pacific Blue-Eye

Origin

Eastern Australia (Queensland to Victoria)

Maximum Size

Around 3–5 cm

Lifespan

1–2 years (naturally short-lived)

Temperament

Peaceful (schooling)

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

45 litres

Recommended Tank Size

75 litres or larger

Diet

Micropredator – small flake, micro-pellets, live and frozen foods

Water Temperature

20–27 °C

pH Range

6.5–7.5

GH Range

5–12 dGH (soft to moderately hard)

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater; tolerates slightly brackish water)

Suitable For

Planted nano and native community aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes – completely plant safe

Suitable Tank Mates

Other small, peaceful natives such as ornate rainbowfish and other Pseudomugil, small rainbowfish, peaceful tetras and rasboras, dwarf shrimp and gentle bottom dwellers.

Avoid Keeping With

Larger or boisterous fish, fin-nippers, and anything big enough to eat a tiny blue-eye.
