This is a Pink plakat female — the short-finned form, in a soft pink colour. Reaching around 6–7 cm, females are more tolerant than males but still feisty, and reward a warm, gently-filtered, lidded tank. Sold as the individual fish, hand-picked from our stock.

Natural Habitat

Bettas hail from the shallow, still and slow-moving waters of Thailand and mainland South-East Asia — rice paddies, floodplains, ditches and marshes. These warm, soft, oxygen-poor waters are exactly why the betta evolved a labyrinth organ to breathe air straight from the surface.

Appearance

The plakat is the short-finned betta, closer in form to the wild fish and built for movement rather than long, flowing fins. This female shows a soft pink body and short, neat finnage. Females are generally a little smaller and less extravagantly finned than males, but no less characterful.

Temperament and Compatibility

Female bettas are more tolerant of one another than males, but they are still feisty and can be nippy — they are not automatically peaceful. A single female does very well in a community of calm, non-nippy fish. If kept together in a 'sorority', it must be a larger, well-planted tank with a group to spread aggression, and even then it is not guaranteed to be harmonious.

Feeding

A carnivore that relishes meaty foods. Offer a quality betta pellet as a staple, supplemented with frozen and live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia. Feed small amounts and avoid overfeeding, as bettas are prone to bloating.

Care Requirements

Give a warm (24–28 °C), gently-filtered, well-planted tank with a secure lid. As a labyrinth breather the betta must reach the surface to gulp air, so leave a gap between the water and the lid and keep the air above warm and humid. Avoid strong flow, which tires the fish and shreds its fins. Stable warmth and clean water keep it healthy and colourful.

Breeding

A bubble-nest builder. The male constructs a raft of bubbles at the surface, then wraps around the female beneath it to spawn; he alone tends the eggs and fry. Pairs must be introduced carefully and separated after spawning, as the male becomes very territorial and the female should be removed once eggs are laid.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Betta splendens

Common Name

Pink Plakat Female (Siamese Fighting Fish)

Origin

South-East Asia (Thailand)

Maximum Size

Around 6–7 cm

Lifespan

3–5 years

Temperament

Females more tolerant than males, but still feisty

Difficulty

Beginner

Minimum Tank Size

20 litres (heated & lidded)

Recommended Tank Size

20 litres or more

Diet

Carnivore

Water Temperature

24–28 °C

pH Range

6.0–7.5

GH Range

5–19 dGH (soft to hard)

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Beginners; warm, planted, gently-filtered tanks

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes — does not damage plants

Suitable Tank Mates

Calm, non-nippy community fish such as small rasboras, corydoras, kuhli loaches, ember tetras and peaceful bottom-dwellers, plus snails.
