Females are hardy, full of character and a little more tolerant than the males, though they are still feisty and best watched closely in company. A labyrinth breather, she reaches around 6 cm and will thrive for years in a warm, gently-filtered, lidded tank.

Natural Habitat

Betta splendens comes from the shallow, slow-moving waters of Thailand and the wider Mekong basin — rice paddies, ditches, marshes and floodplains that are warm, still and often low in oxygen. To cope, the fish evolved a labyrinth organ that lets it gulp air from the surface. Gentle flow, soft planting and floating cover recreate this home and help her feel secure.

Appearance

A female with a delicate pink and pearly wash over the body and fins. Females carry shorter, neater fins than males and often show a small white "egg spot" when mature. Colour deepens and posture becomes bolder as she settles in, especially over a darker substrate with a good diet.

Temperament and Compatibility

Females are more tolerant than males but by no means meek — kept together they form a "sorority" pecking order that needs a well-planted tank, sight breaks and careful monitoring. A single female can be kept in a peaceful community of similarly-sized, non-nippy fish. Do not house with males except for supervised, temporary breeding.

Feeding

A surface-oriented carnivore and micropredator. Offer good betta pellets as a staple and supplement with frozen or live bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp for colour and condition. Feed small amounts and avoid overfeeding, which quickly fouls the water in small tanks.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of around 5 L for a single female, with 20 L or larger far better and essential for a sorority. Keep temperature at 24–28 °C with a reliable heater, pH 6.5–7.5 and soft to neutral water, GH around 5–20 dGH. Being a labyrinth fish she must be able to reach the surface to breathe, so keep the tank lidded (bettas jump) and leave a warm air gap above the water. Gentle filtration and regular water changes keep her at her best.

Breeding

A bubble-nesting species. A conditioned male builds a nest at the surface, courts the female beneath it and wraps her in an embrace to fertilise the eggs, which he then tends. The female should be removed after spawning. Breeding is rewarding but demands separate tanks, warm still water and plenty of fine-leaved cover for the fry.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Betta splendens

Common Name

Siamese Fighting Fish (Pink Samurai, female)

Origin

Thailand and the Mekong basin, Southeast Asia

Maximum Size

Around 6 cm

Lifespan

3–5 years with good care

Temperament

Feisty; females more tolerant than males

Difficulty

Beginner

Minimum Tank Size

5 L (single female)

Recommended Tank Size

20 L or larger

Diet

Carnivore/micropredator: betta pellets, frozen and live foods

Water Temperature

24–28 °C

pH Range

6.5–7.5

GH Range

Soft to neutral, around 5–20 dGH

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Warm, planted community and species tanks

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include small peaceful rasboras, small tetras, corydoras, kuhli loaches, otocinclus, and snails; shrimp may be kept with some risk.
