powder-brown-tang
Powder Brown Tang | Acanthurus japonicus

Description

The Powder Brown Tang is a handsome surgeonfish with a dark brown body, a bold white cheek band and bright yellow and blue fin margins. Active and eye-catching, it is a rewarding grazer for a larger reef, though it can be delicate on import and is best suited to more experienced keepers. It reaches around 20 cm.

Natural Habitat

Acanthurus japonicus is found in the Western Pacific, grazing algae on clear outer reef flats and slopes with good water movement. In the aquarium it needs open swimming room, strong flow, high oxygenation and plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter.

Appearance

The body is rich chocolate-brown with a white bar behind the mouth, an orange band along the dorsal fin, blue-edged fins and a yellow-marked tail, plus the sharp caudal spine common to all tangs. It is often confused with, and occasionally hybridises with, the Achilles Tang, but the white cheek is diagnostic. Choose full-bodied, actively feeding specimens, as newly imported fish can be prone to disease.

Temperament and Compatibility

Semi-aggressive, particularly toward other tangs and similarly shaped fish. Keep only one per tank unless the aquarium is very large, and add tangs together where possible. It coexists well with angelfish, wrasse, clownfish, rabbitfish and other robust reef fish.

Feeding

Primarily a herbivore. Provide plenty of marine algae — dried seaweed (nori) on a clip daily, plus spirulina and herbivore preparations — with some meaty foods such as mysis for variety. Steady vegetable nutrition supports its colour, weight and immune strength and reduces aggression and coral nipping.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of 475 L, with 700 L or larger recommended. Maintain temperature at 24–27°C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity 1.023–1.025. This species can be susceptible to marine ich, so a careful quarantine and stable, high-quality water are important. Give it strong flow, high oxygenation, open swimming space and robust filtration.

Breeding

Breeding is not practical in home aquariums. Tangs are pelagic spawners with tiny larvae requiring specialised commercial rearing. Focus on a spacious, stable system and excellent nutrition.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Acanthurus japonicus

Common Name

Powder Brown Tang

Origin

Western Pacific outer reef flats and slopes

Maximum Size

20 cm

Lifespan

10+ years

Temperament

Semi-aggressive

Difficulty

Advanced

Minimum Tank Size

475 L

Recommended Tank Size

700 L or larger

Diet

Herbivore; marine algae, dried seaweed (nori), spirulina preparations and some meaty foods

Water Temperature

24–27°C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.023–1.025

Suitable For

Larger reef aquariums and FOWLR systems with swimming room

Reef Safe

Reef safe with caution; generally safe with corals if kept well fed, but may nip if underfed

Plant Safe

Not applicable for marine fish

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include angelfish, wrasse, clownfish, rabbitfish, larger gobies and other robust reef fish.
