Males flush with electric blues, reds and pink stripes when displaying. Peaceful and endlessly busy, it is a superb reef fish that reaches around 12 cm.

Natural Habitat

Cirrhilabrus lineatus is found on outer reef slopes and rubble zones of the Coral Sea and western Pacific, including eastern Australian waters. It lives in loose aggregations above the reef, darting down into cover when startled. In the aquarium it appreciates open water for swimming, live rock for shelter and a securely fitted lid.

Appearance

Males are stunning, with a magenta to red body crossed by fine electric-blue horizontal lines, a yellow-green flank and blue-edged fins that intensify during courtship. Females and sub-adults are more subdued red-orange. This is a slender, streamlined wrasse built for constant movement.

Temperament and Compatibility

Peaceful and on the timid side for a fairy wrasse. It mixes beautifully with other calm reef fish but can be bullied by pushy tankmates, so add it before or alongside more assertive species. Only keep one male per tank unless the aquarium is very large.

Feeding

A carnivore and planktivore. Offer a varied diet of mysis, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood and good-quality marine pellets and flake, fed two or three times daily. Frequent small feeds keep its colour and condition at their best.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of 250 L, with 340 L or larger recommended to give it room to cruise. Maintain temperature at 24–27°C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity 1.023–1.025. Stable water, gentle to moderate flow and plenty of rockwork suit it well. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as fairy wrasses are accomplished jumpers.

Breeding

Breeding is not practical in home aquariums. Like other fairy wrasses it is a pelagic spawner with tiny planktonic larvae that require specialised rearing. Focus instead on excellent nutrition and stable conditions.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Cirrhilabrus lineatus

Common Name

Purple Lined Fairy Wrasse

Origin

Coral Sea and western Pacific, including eastern Australia

Maximum Size

12 cm

Lifespan

5–8 years

Temperament

Peaceful

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

250 L

Recommended Tank Size

340 L or larger

Diet

Carnivore; mysis, enriched brine shrimp, chopped seafood and marine pellets

Water Temperature

24–27°C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.023–1.025

Suitable For

Peaceful reef aquariums with a secure lid

Reef Safe

Reef safe; will not harm corals or clams

Plant Safe

Not applicable for marine fish

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include other fairy and flasher wrasses, anthias, cardinalfish, clownfish, gobies, tangs and other peaceful reef species.
